upzoning could have given the homeowners more land value while also resulting in more supply for renters in the long run. But california politicians are cowardly.

I think there's an option that achieves taxing the richest much more effectively than just by taxing the highest income brackets, and it's called Land Value Tax

The tax basis reset on inheritance is a clear loophole. But I do suspect it would become irrelevant under full LVT thanks to ATCOR

At some point, it is crab mentality, so it's important to be careful about what we mean exactly. It matters whether the wealth was earned or not, how much of it was, by what mechanism, etc.

Where I differ from leftists is that wealth itself doesn't offend me. I'd prefer the rich build mansions on cheap land than to sit on cash. I want a funded govt and fewer barriers to development. Reducing wealth isn't my goal, but yes we should target specific rich people who interfere in democracy
