We were there too this morning!

It is nice to see Monarchs again. They were a rare sighting these past few years.

I might be born in the wrong century. But to me, this is degrowth. The scuttle, brush, and razor are less efficient than cartridges, but they will be with me for most of my life. Shaving has gone from a tiring chore to a skill developing moment of meditation.

Fair thee well, my old friend. It's time to put you 📌 out to pasture.

The reason I can't afford a house?

I have a downpayment's worth of pine nuts in this pesto.

Status update on wildfire smoke in Southern Ontario. Appropriate beer.

I was using NRCan's latest climate adjusted species distribution maps, and some of the suggested distribution ranges are... shocking.
Here's Picea abies (white spruce). It's going into soil where P. abies can't grow.

Got a chance to see a lovely Riëse and Muller bakfiets. I am a bit jealous of the cargo space. Our Butcher and Bicycle Mk1-e is super stable and a great ride, but the foot well makes it harder to load up with larger boxes.

Taken at 0830hr on July 14, 2025, in Kitchener-Waterloo.

A 24 hour exposure of 22.5ug/m3 is equivalent to the health impacts of smoking 1 cigarette.

This figure (AR6 WG3 Chp 12) shows 'Buildings' as part of the CDR portfolio. It's makes bldgs seem as viable strategies to store carbon, especially with short-cycle biomass (e.g. grasses).
But Brunner et al (2024) suggest you need centuries of storage. wbLCA says bldgs last 50 years.

Regular reminder to all the #greenbuilding #climate mitigation folks: IPCC AR6 WGIII Chapter 12 says that CDR only refers to anthropogenic activities that remove CO2 from the atmosphere and store it durably in geological, terrestrial, or oceanic reservoirs.

Buildings & products do not count.

And famine and drought! Also pestilence. And these bring along a fourth: war caused by scarcity. This is going to be one hell of a party with the 5th member joining:

I couldn't find a gif of the Pteranodons (perhaps too niche?), but here's a static image of the scene:

This is a figure from a bit out of date document but it outlines priorities for measures that achieve differing levels of adaptation and mitigation.

Happy #wildfire #smoke season to all those who observe.

Fun fact, PM2.5 are particles so tiny they seep into your blood through your lung alveoli. These particles then oxidize the inside of your blood vessels causing all sorts of damage. Wildfire smoke is a major source of heart attacks and stroke.
