I’m saying all this because I can hear the same incredulous anger and quiver of fear in this woman’s voice that I first heard in Roxy’s. It is to our endless shame that we have let monsters drag us back to the bad old days. When this is over, there’s got to be a reckoning. They do not get to win.

I’ve thought about Roxy a lot in the intervening 30 years. Seeing increased trans visibility, activism, and acceptance, I’ve felt how hard it must have been for her to be out in public so far ahead of the culture. It felt good to imagine those days were behind us and the Steves had learned to stfu.

Then reunion season hit. Got to work one day and Roxy was gone. She later told me that the development office had closed her position. When I asked my boss’s boss, a super progressive lady in an interracial marriage why, I got a bunch of bullshit about “public facing positions” and “donor comfort.”

Roxy stayed for 3 months and we got to be close. It was my first experience of friendship with an out trans person. She was living out of her car and had just gotten her top surgery. Really bitter. But hilarious and took zero bullshit. We spent hours chain smoking in the loading dock on “break.”

A thousand years ago (okay 1995) I was working in the development office at my University. We had a secretary leave and hired a temp in her place. Get to work the next day and there’s a 6’ trans woman named Roxy at the desk next to mine. A minute later my frat boy boss emailed me to come see him.
