#31daysofgraves day 31 Memento Mori. Sadly the headstones at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, with memento mori, are now mostly worn away. These images are all from Dunblane Museum. Staff & volunteers there are helping with a new graveyard audio tour, hopefully out soon. 🤞 Cheeky wee plug! 😀

#31daysofgraves day 30 colour. Wordplay again, but with a positive twist! This is the Finlayson, of GREENhill, headstone in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, previously flat and now re-erected by the family. Their ancestors were buried in the nave of the Cathedral before the restoration.

#31daysofgraves Day 29 occupation. This is the headstone of Dr Thomas Brown, in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. Originally he intended to be a minister, but changed career when he graduated from Glasgow Uni as a surgeon in 1858. He worked in Dunblane for 34yrs where he was well liked and appreciated.

#31daysofgraves day 28 column. A selection of columns from Dunblane cathedral graveyard , including fake, iron and missing!

#31daysofgraves day 27 tree. Headstones to some of the many ASHfield families buried in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. A couple of miles north of Dunblane, Ashfield was built by John Pullar of Perth, who bought the mill there in 1865, to house workers of what became his new silk-dyeing mill.

#31daysofgraveys Day26 figure. This is the largest figure in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, made by monumental sculpture George Christie from Perth. It marks the grave of Jane Stevenson Cairns Wright who died age 23 of pneumonic phthisis (non tubercular). Image by Ewing Wallace.

#31daysofgraves day 25 graveside ornament. Zero, not one, too old a graveyard at Dunblane Cathedral. However this image from one in the Dunblane Museum (an excellent place 😁) shows some immortelles. There a few images in their collection showing these so they must have been popular here in the day.

#31daysofgraves Day 24 unique animal. Can only be this, one of my favourites, a unicorn in Dunblane Cathedral's graveyard. It has seen better days, but is now part of a group being cared for by HES' stone conservation team, who do an amazing job! We had at least one other unicorn, now gone.

#31daysofgraves Day 23, cross. We have a few of the usual crosses in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, so thought I would highlight this rather special one, made by monumental sculptor Peter Smith and designed by architect William Leiper.

#31daysofgraves Day 22 Landscape. This headstone, at Dunblane Cathedral, is to the Alexander Cairns who in the mid 19th century was a farmer at Hungryhill Dunblane. When daughter Margaret died in 1887 she was living at Holmehill Cottage. Hoping two hills make a landscape!

#31daysofgraves Day 20 wreath, not the most elaborate, but I think, still counts. Headstone in Dunblane Cathedral Graveyard to the Marshall family including Janet Marshall innkeeper at the Stirling Arms Hotel 1873-1917, now The Riverside. Sadly she was found drowned at the side of the River Allan.

#31daysofgraves day 19 social group, Ministers. We have a ministers corner in the south west section of Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, these are just a sample. One ministers is also buried on the north side and one in the nave. I have my suspicions for the one on the north side, he wasn't popular.

#31daysofgraves Day 18 mistake. This headstone which isn't fixed in the ground is not in the right place, at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. Facing the wrong way and on the wrong lair. From records I can't find where it's should be which is a shame at it has a comparatively recent date on it of 1996.

#31daysofgraves Day 17 relocated. Headstone of young Robert Gilbert Dick who died aged 11yrs of bronchitis. Should be in the Dunblane Cathedral graveyard but here it is, on a recently aquired 'bed', protected in the nave. His father was apparently a friend of artist William Holman Hunt.

#31daysofgraves day 16 obelisk. This memorial is at the entrance of Dunblane Cathedral graveyard to William McCowan who it says died 'in defence of the Union'. However as local historian and journalist Andy Mitchell discovered this wasn't quite true as on that day McOwan was ill & he died 2.4.1864.

#31daysofgraves Day 15, damaged. A long list, unfortunately, which is why we have so much fencing at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. As an example this one to the Bruce family fell during storm Arwen. The wooden dowels wouldn't have helped!

#31daysofgraves Day 14 inside. There are 13 graves marked on the floor of the nave, at Dunblane Cathedral, covered now by the pews. There were many more burials, probably hundreds. The 1st is the oldest 1639 or maybe 1638, the 2nd 1712, suggested perhaps the mason who carved the date was illiterate.

#31daysofgraves Day 13 skeleton. There is no full skeleton at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, but a few skull and bones. Sadly not many of these left now either; old pics show there were more. Pic no. 3, all Dunblane Museum, is under the turf, near the entrance. The winged angel looking like ribs!

Perthshire looking gorgeous in the sunshine. Glen Artney route.
October 12, 2025 at 3:47 PM
#31daysofgraves Day 12 notable women. Miss Agnes Annand is buried here, at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, but not named on the headstone. For over 50yrs she (and her mum) ran one of the oldest newsagents in the country, in the High St. Cared for her invalid niece and educated many orphan children.

#31daysofgraves Sergeant Albert Bayne who received Distinguished Conduct Medal. Bayne family headstone in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. A few weeks after this article was published he was killed in action.

#31daysofgraves Day 10 urn. We have a few urns at Dunblane Cathedral graveyard. This is my favourite, as I'm rather partial to a palmette or two or three! John Watson manager of Airthrey paper mill and wife Mary Coubrough. Note blue sky, at last.
October 10, 2025 at 10:36 AM
#31daysofgraves Day 9 hand. Dunblane Cathedral graveyard doesn't seem to have any carvings of hands, so I've opted for this epitaph instead. 'Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to thy cross I cling.'
October 9, 2025 at 11:14 AM
#31daysofgraves Day 8 glass. John Gauld of Glass, Banffshire, Detective Sergeant, worked in Perthshire Constabulary for almost 30yrs. Also Andrew Barlas head gardener on Glassingall estate. Died when blood vessel burst while he had a stretch! Dunblane Cathedral graveyard.

#31daysofgraves Day 7 angel. In this case a lost angel in Dunblane Cathedral graveyard, sadly no longer visible, but we do have an image of it from about 100yrs ago of how lovely it looked. Image from Dunblane Museum.
