If I was in the Doctor Who universe I’d never dig anywhere.

Nothing good ever comes from digging…

- as well as having them pose a credible threat to the Doctor, his friends and the universe.

The story had a bunch of main characters but still manage to give an interesting arc to each of them.

Lucie Miller/To the Death: By far our favourite finale of the bunch. It has very strong characterisation and character moments. We really enjoyed the fact that the Doctor and Lucie have believable disagreements to the very end.
It was also really good having the Daleks both begin and end this run -

Post your favourite Doctor Who. Wrong answers only.

Prisoner of the Sun: It's amazing how a simple concept can be elevated with good writing.
The worldbuilding was great - the villains, specifically all felt extremely competent and believable (even with the relatively short runtime).
The main character conflict for the Doctor is also very compelling.

Relative Dimensions: An interesting family drama that is occasionally interrupted by a giant fish. The timey-wimeyness is not particularly necessary for the plot...

The family drama (that we did like) does flesh out the relationship between the Doctor and Susan in satisfying ways.

We don't particularly like how the Doctor turns into a time cop in response to the Monk's meddling and would've preferred a more careless Monk with a more nuanced disagreement from the Doctor.

We were quite surprised at how quickly Tamsin left the TARDIS...

Deimos/The Resurrection of Mars: Keeping the tradition of the Ice Warriors being the least interesting part of an Ice Warriors story, this story's most interesting part is the Doctor-Monk Lucie-Tamsin conflicts.

These conflicts are compelling but could've been better introduced in prior stories.

The Book of Kells: A decent episode with a returning villain with a decent reintroduction. It does what it sets out to do well but doesn't do much more than that.

We did appreciate the various references to the Sound of Music.

Nevermore: It was nice meeting Tamsin properly though we wish the story focused on her and her relationship with the Doctor a bit more (especially as we didn't get that in her introduction).

The story itself is a mixed bag - some interesting ideas but a bit slow at parts.

Situation Vacant: We understand what the episode was trying to do (four candidates for companions, none of which act genuinely) but we didn't like the execution very much.

It's a shame we know very little about the new companion as she was playing a character for the vast majority of the episode...

An Earthly Child: This story was a bit of a mess - it probably should've picked one or two of its ideas and stick with them...

That being said, it was nice seeing Susan again and the post-Dalek invasion Earth is well-realised (including xenophobia and post Dalek slang).

Death in Blackpool: This might just be the best episode of the run so far.

An excellent finale to aunt Pat story as well as a brilliant departure for Lucie.

The antagonist plays a minor role that serves to strengthen the main interpersonal drama which is a very good choice.

Goodbye Lucie

It was nice seeing the Headhunter back and examine her relationship with Karen (additionally it was interesting seeing that she wouldn't give out her name to save her life, quite literally).

The Eight Truths/Worldwide Web: This is probably the strongest series finale so far - Solid thought the whole runtime in both plot and characters.

The portrayal of the cult felt very realistic (so the spiders could've probably spare the use of psychic powers...).

Really wish I could play outer wilds again… Such a brilliant game…

The Cannibalists: This was a really good episode.

Fun characters, interesting setting and a relatively fast pace make this one a really fun listen.

Despite the fact that we predicted the various twists and turns the plot still works really well.

The Scapegoat: A pretty standard outing for the Doctor and Lucie. It had some interesting ideas and good moments but these ideas were not explored as deeply as we would've liked.

It wasn't bad but we feel like it didn't live up to its full potential either...

Wirrn Dawn: We are a bit of two minds on this one but we can agree that the second part was stronger than the first one. Having a lot less action and more character/story moments.
Additionally, the Doctor felt a bit out of character in the conclusion being way too permissive of human sacrifice.

The Beast of Orlok: We had a lot of fun with this one.

The story does the obvious twist but has some interesting stuff going on in addition to it. Having some grasp of German made the names in this one extremely funny.

It features twins named Hans and Gretta and doesn't do the obvious referance.

Hothouse: A new take on one of our favourite classic villains. A bit heavy handed with the enviromentalist message but it works for the story. The human element is a particular highlight (even for minor characters that appear for half a scene).

Love the "climate change will return" cliffhanger...
December 21, 2024 at 2:11 AM
Orbis: On its own it would be a mixed bag, and it needed to be a lot better than that to justify the changes it makes to the world and characters (especially the Doctor).

That being said, we liked the idea of a story where the Doctor loses (and think there should be more of those).
December 20, 2024 at 11:47 PM
...The characters hide information from each other for no reason, the sisterhood of Karn are way too trigger happy
Also, the only reason the story isn't resolved before it even starts (by the same resolution it has anyways) is because the characters don't to the obvious thing...

Sisters of the Flame/The Vengeance of Morbius:
This story was too slow for us - it could've been a single episode but even then it would have other problems:
Lucie is out of character at the beginning of the story just for her to feel bad about what she does later.

...

The Zygon Who Fell to Earth: A sequel (of sorts) to THoGR that greatly improves on its predecessor. Our favourite aspect was the personal drama rather than the alien plot.

We predicted the final twist but liked it nonetheless...

The Doctor's prejedice against the Zygons bothered us quite a bit.
