Let alone know himself the way he does now. Let alone live for himself the way he does now. Dedue, too, is still unpracticed in deciding how he feels about living the rest of his life. He may feel less sundered and denied from that which may perhaps make him whole, but every so often, a new opening, another gap will make itself clear. The road to peace is riddled with holes, big enough to fall into and remain stuck. Sylvain is right to ask; it does beg the question. What does he want? [or; children and their parents. there was a point where i tried to conjure a sort of distant past-near past-present perspective by changing paragraph alignments with each time change but when i realized how messy it was gonna be and how this fic needed to be like 25k words i was like ok let's switch gears entirely lol
Enough time has passed, and so they will cut to the quick. Just after the war, this conversation would have been—had been—a great back and forth until Felix stormed off, resolution a few fuming, silent days away. The shouts are muffled, mottled, but loud enough to be heard past the sitting room, the bed room, and the wailing wind of the balcony outside of Dimitri’s personal chambers. Though it does not sound as though there’s been a fray between the posted kingsguard and the duke before the entry door swings open and slams into the wall, rattling what little in paintings and fine things Dimitri keeps. Closer now, closer again, the stop and start of stalking foot steps, likely taken aback by each new horror left in Dimitri’s wake. Scattered pages, rambling notes, broken inkwells, shattered crockery. Closer, a bedroom in disarray, curtains drawn against all light, save the open door to the balcony. Dimitri sits with his back to the stone parapet, curled in the old cloak he’d refused to burn after the war. How could he ever. How could he. Felix stands in the doorway, a shadow past the threshold daylight can reach inside. He is incandescent only in rage. “Everyone told me you were sick, boar,” Felix spits, quietly, coldly. “Why am I the last to know what that really means?” “Because you’ve always been too much of a crybaby to be of any use, any use at all,” is what Dimitri hears Glenn say. Then came the time where still between them was that great back and forth except now Felix, excruciated, would stay; resolution was hard fought. Then, there was just a regular back and forth, not at all a huge doing, before there was minimal back and forth. And now, they anticipate the others' moves so entirely—like dancing, and sometimes, Felix's least favorite kind of sparring—that the conversation is quite short.

wipwednesday except it's the fodlan frights prompt i didn't finish. felix takes dimitri to recover from illness to a manor by the sea where they are confronted with their own faerghan-folklore doppelgagers (i.e. from other routes); for felix it's a horror movie and for dimitri it's Tuesday.
A memory, far off and coated in dust, is shaken from its grey. "It still stands?" "It does," the corner of Felix's mouth twitches, though he proceeds as business. "I've sent some of my staff ahead to make sure the property has been kept well enough for your use." "My use?" "Your recovery." Felix is nearly accusatory as he says this, as though Dimitri is sick on purpose, to spite him. "Privacy, sea air, cold water. No court, no desks, no paperwork." No one to see you waste away, no one to see you rant and rave—this comes from Dimitri also, and not whatever it is that watches him. He tells Felix in good humor: "There ought to be a desk somewhere on the property, I'm sure." "Not one that you'll find yourself anywhere near, if I have anything to say about it," Felix snaps. "You will be coming also?" "That's what I said, weren't you listening?" "Always." Dimitri tells him. "And you are going as my?" Felix's eyes narrow, and he does not rise to the bait."Your shield.
