This Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon) visited our yard this week in #SouthPorcupineOntario. I had never observed one in Ontario before! It really stood out from all the slate-coloured juncos! #TimminsBirds #NorthernOntarioBirds #OntarioBirds
A Dark-eyed Junco is perched on a spruce branch in Timmins, northern Ontario. Its prominent black hood, chestnut coloured flanks, and white belly indicates that it is the ‘Oregon’ form of the Dar-eyed Junco, which is more common in western North America.

It was a calm and quiet night for our #BirdsCanada Northern Ontario Nocturnal #OwlSurvey last night, near #TimminsOntario. The full Moon was amazing! 🌕 We did not hear any owls, but the absence of owls is still important data. What a beautiful night! #Birds @volunteer4birds.bsky.social
It's night time and the full Moon is high and bright, shining on the trees and the snow. At one of our last stops during our owl survey route, the road is bordered with snow banks and tall trees, and the full Moon is still very bright behind a thin layer of clouds. A volunteer wearing a reflective vest is going to get our traffic security post on the road ahead.

Nature enthusiasts braved the -32°C wind chill temperatures on Family Day at Hersey Lake Conservation Area in Timmins for MRCA's annual Winter Hiking Day! Our Great Backyard Bird Count hike was a lot of fun!! ❄️🐦 #GreatBackyardBirdCount #GBBC2025 #TimminsOntario #TimminsBirds #GBBC

A Ruffed Grouse, all puffed up, is perched in the middle of thick snowy conifer branches. The grouse is very well camouflaged with its brown patterned plumage.

The highlight of day 1 of the #GreatBackyardBirdCount for us was watching Canada Jays feeding on a freshly killed Snowshoe Hare carcass... and then finding a Canada Lynx having a short nap nearby! I love winter in northern Ontario's #BorealForest #GBBC #SouthPorcupineBirds #Birds
A Canada Jay, an all grey and white medium size bird, has a bill full of meat. The remains of a snowshoe hare carcass lies in the snow beside the bird. A Canada Lynx is napping, all curled up in the thick snow, in the afternoon sunshine.

First day of the #GreatBackyardBirdCount did not disappoint! We snowshoed a new trail near South Porcupine and saw some White-winged Crossbills and a few other species. #Birds #SouthPorcupineBirds #GBBC2025

Beside the man's snowshoe trail, we can see fresh tracks left by a Canada Lynx a moment earlier. In a conifer tree-top full of cones, two birds are busy feeding on the cones; one greyish-brown female, and a red male with black wings with white bars. These birds are called White-winged Crossbills and they feed on conifer cones with their unique crossed mandibles.

Yes we had a few White-winged Crossbills come by our yard this winter (YAY!) and saw some flocks feeding on spruce cones along the neighbourhood trails! I'm so happy to see them after a 4 year absence! I really hope to see young ones before the end of Atlas-3!! Here's one from this Sunday!

First time posting here. Here's an American Three-toed Woodpecker we saw this weekend along our neighbourhood trail in South Porcupine (near Timmins, northern Ontario 🇨🇦). I love how these woodpeckers keep on foraging non-stop, no matter what goes on around them!! #SouthPorcupineBirds #OntarioBirds
An American Three-toed Woodpecker, all black with white barring on the flanks and on the back, is clinging to a black spruce trunk while flaking pieces of bark with its bill. We can see the part of the exposed trunk where bark is missing and the tiny holes where the woodpecker has foraged for wood-boring insects.
