And to show how international relations can shift over time - my Great Uncle Noel Frederick Ross served as a gunner on HMS Victorious during the Arctic Convoys of WW2, braving treacherous conditions to supply arms and supplies to the Soviets in the fight against the Nazis.

He was based in the camp under Russian attack at Balaclava in Crimea in 1854. The “Thin Red Line” held - wearing the very uniforms he made. The action was immortalised in Robert Gibb’s painting located in Edinburgh Castle.

The UK has its own history of empire, colonialism, slavery and ethnic cleansing.

There’s arguably more value in more people learning about that - so British exceptionalism doesn’t rule the waves and moral complacency doesn’t take hold.

Across borders and here in the UK, some powerful people - like wolves in sheep’s clothing - protect their wealth and divide societies by blaming the poor, migrants, and minorities for the very inequality they sustain. Humanity still has a long way to go.
