“Merry Christmas?” Jace plasters on a fake grin to accompany his open-armed shrug. Gemma punches him again, this time harder, causing Jace to wince and rub the point of contact. There’s a queasiness in my gut and a dizziness in my head, and I’m unsure if it’s coming from the beer and lack of food or from the sudden shock to my limbic system. Maybe both. But the fire building within me, the one threatening to rage out of control, is one hundred percent stoked by the man who just walked through that door.

I regret the decision to separate the portraits from the rest of the part when my gaze lands on Kent standing in the doorway in a cobalt blue tailored three-piece pinstripe suit. I try hard to control the expression on my face but am unable to stop the sharp inhale that likely gives away my shock. A few days ago I wanted to draw him before I knew who he was. And here he is, waiting to be drawn in a silly little pencil drawing that won’t do him an ounce of justice. “Oh. It’s you,” I snap as my defensive snark takes over.

I’d been too busy with feast prep to pay attention to my texts throughout the day, except for the one selfie Jace sent. He’d had a playful smirk on his face and a Santa hat he’d found on his flour-hunting trip on his head. The selfie had put a stupid grin on my face I couldn’t shake for a half hour. This seems to be my only instance of blood-curdling in all of my manuscripts, and this dates back to like 2013. I had to remove all the double spaces after the periods. 🤣

I need to use blood-curdling more often. I thought for sure it would be in some of my horror/dark fantasy stuff.

“Nice trick Kalais, but it’s over. If you go through that portal, Victor is waiting for you on the other side. He will stop you until I get there to finish this.” I brandished the dagger, already dripping with Kalais’ blood. His retreat to the portal stopped, and he turned back to me. “Is he really waiting? Then maybe I should finish this now and take him your head.” Kailais sneered. “Wouldn’t that be lovely? But… that dagger is problematic. I’ve not felt pain like this in millennia. I think I’ll just kill you this way instead.” Kalais lunged toward me, flinging a spell as he came. A bronze net manifested out of thin air. I tried to flap my wings to retreat, but it was too late as the bronze sliced through the tips of my fiery manifestation leaving me struggling to stay afloat as my wings failed. Stuffing a hand through the net, I hooked my fingers onto Kalais’ clothes. His smug expression faded as he resisted my pull, staying my descent. As I dangled in the air, one arm outstretched to Kalais, I worked the net over my head to free myself before Kalais’ balance slipped, letting out a blood-curdling scream as he tumbled over the edge. His staff flew out of his hands as he grasped at the air for something to stop his fall.

Why can’t we pair popcorn with hot chocolate? You two go find a cheesy Christmas movie to put on while this finishes. We need an evening to relax.” “I’ll let Jace pick out the movie. I need to feed Ziggy.” I tap my watch indicating the late hour. “If I’m in charge of the movie, then we are absolutely watching Die Hard.” “No! Jace, you better not. I want a real Christmas movie.” Gemma shrieks and frisbees a paper plate at Jace’s head. He ducks, narrowly avoiding a plate to the face. “It is a real Christmas movie!”

I had to go back into the depths of WIPs I haven't worked on in over 5 years to find it, but I have dungeon. I was curious whether I would and found it exactly once in the 5 manuscripts I checked.

This is a Bloodborne-inspired epic fantasy I hope to one day finish.

Is it the keep?” “We are in a heavily fortified area. It’s not quite the keep, but we are safe here. We run everything from here.” “So, like a base camp?” “Yes. Like a base camp.” “I saw the monsters here. The same ones we have. I thought we were the only ones…” “No. You’re not the only ones. We are on the verge of ending it, and that’s why Rafi went to your world. On a scouting mission. But that has failed now. Perhaps you will have some of the information that we need.” “I will offer you whatever information that I can.” “We can talk about that later, my dear. You won’t be able to leave for a while anyway. That jump would have taken such a toll on your body. It’s really a wonder you’re alive.” Helem stopped in her tracks, startling the woman whose arms were still around her and also bringing her to a halt. “What is it, dear?” “You said, leave? I will be able to go back home?” Hope swelled in Helem’s chest at the mention of home.

I lost my best girl. My sassy green eyed lady. She chose me in 2009 when I was still in college & got me through the rest of my 20s & most of my 30s. Highest highs & lowest lows. Over 16 years, but she was much older.

There will always be an Evy-shaped hole in my heart.
