Been reading through this and there are so many ways to almost destroy the heroine but have her save herself. Leaping from a burning building, nearly run over with a juggernaut but rescued by a friendly elephant, or holding off a cage full of tigers. The leopards are just a minor inconvenience.

Oops. Skipped a century. Kathlyn's novelization was out in early 1914. Perils of Pauline came out later that year and the novelization in 1915.
