#FantasyIndiesDecember Day 12, enjoy a snippet from my current WIP! "The Night Train" is inspired by real-world radio shows like Suspense (1942-1962) and Nightbeat (1950-1952)! Television doesn't exist in Stellar Eclipse, so radio shows are the staple of home entertainment.
Baltan turned on the radio. It was already turned to The Night Train's station, and within moments the jazzy opening played: a few sharp string chords, fading out to a lively, rhythmic duet of piano and ride cymbal. He plopped down on the couch, noting that although Azzie was doing his best to look like he was asleep, his ear twitched in time to the music. Gradually, the music petered out altogether, giving way to the announcer. "Tonight, the murderous tale of a mysterious briefcase. What's in the briefcase, and why would it drive someone to kill? Some secrets are deadly, and some truths deadlier. Check your luggage carefully as you board...The Night Train! But first, a word from our sponsor: Sunrise Coffee..." Eureka leaned out of the kitchen, catching Baltan's eye. "I'll wager the first slice of cake that I can figure out who the killer is before the second ad break." "There's cake?" Baltan asked. "There can be." "I accept, raise you the last slice of cake, and I bet I can figure it out before the entire cast is revealed." "Showing off a bit, aren't you?" Eureka laughed. "There's cake on the line," Baltan responded with the utmost seriousness.

The timeline in Cloudless Rain is actually really important, as it is set just over a week before the winter solstice--which, if you recall from previous days, is a major holiday (negative). That sets the story in late autumn/early winter.

#FantasyIndiesDecember Day 6: Saturday Snippet
Going to put this short bit of writing into an image because it won't fit otherwise. This is the beginning of the Weathering the Storm edition of Cloudless Rain, which is my current WIP!
Looking back, everything had taken a sharp turn for the worse the day Baltan's roommate brought home a corpse. The late autumn storm had reached its crescendo the previous night, leaving dense cloud coverage and scattered showers behind. Soon the last traces of summer humidity would give way to the drier chill of winter. Baltan would survive by hiding away in bed, buried under two thick blankets and wool pajamas, until the spring thaw coaxed him out of his hibernation. One glance at the room would have made anyone wonder if he had gotten an early start. A pile of unsorted laundry taunted him from the foot of his bed, creating a large lump when he threw his patched comforter over it. The stale taste of old soda dried his mouth, and when he reached for a glass of water he knocked the empty bottle off his nightstand. It clinked against two others that lurked on the floor. He nudged them aside with his foot as he shambled out of bed and tugged the thick, dark curtain away from his window. My writing career (such that it is) summed up in one image:

For a moment, Baltan thought he must have slept in until after dusk. The sky was nearly black, but the street lamp on the corner hadn't come on. The living room downstairs fared no better, having almost no natural lighting. The sliding glass door to what passed for a backyard looked directly onto the stone alley wall, with barely enough room to stand between them for a smoke. Baltan tried to turn on the lamp at the foot of the stairs as he passed. Nothing happened. The living room was a mess, but Baltan could navigate it blindfolded if he had to. He toed his way around the clutter of stacked books, old newspapers, and to-be-recycled bottles in the dark, until he made it to the relatively tidy kitchen. It was there and then, after an unexpectedly loud yawn, that Baltan was awake enough to make a key observation: the house was quiet.
