there's more compression formats that I won't get too in-depth with but if you really wanna be # Optimal here's a lil basic flowchart I made for compression in ffxiv.

if you see format: B8G8R8A8UNorm, that's uncompressed
Block Compression Flowmap - a loose guide to help determine what the best compression format for your textures might be What type of texture do you have? Index: BC5 only stores info from the red and green channels! it doesn't save blue or alpha channel data. perfect for ID maps that only use RG channels Decal: BC4 doesn't store colour data, only greyscale. it also doesn't store any data for alpha, so it's perfect for black & white decals that only use black and white For normal, mask & diffuse: If colour is more important to you: BC7 stores RGB channels as well as alpha channel data. the RGB channel compression is almost indistinguishable from the uncompressed image. Alpha channel is usually lower quality, however. this is the highest quality compression format available to you! it may take time to compress depending on your PC hardware. If transparency is most important to you: BC3 stores RGB channels as well as alpha channel data like BC7 does. it's a simpler compression algorithm that takes less time to process. it does a better job at preserving the alpha channel data compared to BC7, so if you need a cleaner alpha channel this one might be for you!. it does a poorer job at colour accuracy when compared to BC7 (note: seriously only use this if transparency is your ONLY concern. it sucks ass at colour accuracy) No transparency: BC1 stores RGB channel data, but doesn't store alpha channel. it's great for textures that are fully opaqure and don't use transparency. it is lower quality when compared to BC7 however. if you want better quality, use BC7 Compression is non-reversible and destructive to the files! please make sure you have a backup before compressing
