As it stands now, AI technology is not being developed with humanity in mind. We haven't come up with ways of using it ethically, and we are too impatient to wait, which will be our downfall. We are playing around with something really dangerous.

I think when we invent certain technology before our culture is evolved to be able to ethically use it, it does way more harm than good, and it arrests our development towards becoming the kind of people who COULD ethically use it in the future.

I do not think we should be discussing the possibility of artificial sentience when humanity currently does not value all the sentience that already exists. Perhaps there is a future where actual AI could exist without harm, but it is NOT here and now.

I spent an hour respectfully discussing AI with a pro-AI friend, and while I agree with him that analytical AI is good for science, my position remains firm that it's terrible for the humanities because it is antithetical to humanity.
