Visiting Gold Beach on the Normandy coast last week: remembering a generation who gave so much for our security and freedom.
Today is the 81st anniversary of D-Day.
Last week I visited the British Normandy Memorial overlooking Gold Beach where the names of 22,442 of servicemen and women who fell in the D-Day operation and Battle of Normandy are remembered.
We are forever in their debt.

I used to speed through here twice a week. Now less frequently, but every time I think what a phenomenal, genuinely game-changing example of big infrastructure it is. 🇬🇧🚄🇫🇷

It’s an extraordinary and deeply moving place to visit.
The land around the Memorial site, now woodland, parkland and farmland, is heavily cratered with shell holes and trench lines. Much of the land cordoned off to this day due to live ordnance in the ground.

He joined up as a 19 year old labourer, from Swinton a small coal mining town in South Yorkshire. Like many of his generation, he didn’t speak much about his war service. I wish we knew more.

My Grandad was in 651 Squadron the Army Air Corps, and his Second World War service took him to Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy and as the war in Europe ended, to Austria.
