The team was busy surveying St. Clair Cave, St. Catherine, while I was goofing around and having a little fun observing the bats. Fieldwork isn’t always serious. Sometimes you just have to enjoy the moment too.
Quick reminder: please don’t release unwanted pets

The team was at Hope Gardens, where we set up equipment and hosted people.
Check out the equipment used in bat assessments: mist nets, harp traps, and acoustic devices. It was also a great chance to meet the experts and ask questions about bats and cave research.

Today the team is back in Kingston summarising the field activities from our post-hurricane bat surveys.
Did you know that there are caves in close proximity to the city and that some bat species regularly use urban spaces for roosting and foraging?

We were just chilling and testing some gear on the UWI campus. We checked on the bats (Eumops sp.) that roost in a coconut tree. We didn’t catch any bats from the tree, but we still had a great time and got some useful testing done.

I got a call about an injured John crow that was supposedly attacking a pet cat… or was it the cat attacking the John crow? 🤔
I went to help the injured bird, but from the video, he clearly had other plans.
I hope the little guy is okay.

Today, Ryan and Erika from the #RatBatPack are heading back home. We’re truly grateful that they took the time to assist with post-hurricane cave assessments following Hurricane Melissa.
We hope you both liked the gift made by Samantha—though I was told the gold gift

Today the team is at Rocka Spring Caverns in St Mary, one of the special cave systems in Jamaica. We are assessing how Hurricane Melissa affected the surrounding vegetation and the impacts on cave fauna, including bats.

Dr Philliph talks about the work being carried out at Stony Hill Cave and other ongoing activities. He is setting up a harp trap and is hopeful of recording the Critically Endangered endemic Jamaican Flower Bat.

Here, my friend and colleague Dr Phillip Olebaum is assessing Wallenford Cave, checking on our ratbats and other cave-dwelling fauna.
This work is important for understanding how Category 5 Hurricane Melissa has impacted cave ecosystems.
