Great title!

... estimate externalities related to the production of fossil fuels, which are also large.)

No governments, and no other inter-governmental organisations that estimate subsidies combine externalities with subsidies and call the total "subsidies". See my 🧷ed skeet for more.

That USD 7 trillion estimate of fossil fuel subsidies (for 2022, not 2023) comes from the IMF, which uses a highly non-standard definition of "subsidy". USD 5.7 trillion of that is actually the IMF's estimate of externalised costs related to the use of fossil fuels. (Note: the IMF does not ...

That is a non-standard definition of a "subsidy", one that is not used by any government or any other inter-governmental organization that produces estimates of subsidies to specific sectors. (Even other parts of the IMF don't conflate externalities with actual subsidies). See my 🧷ed skeet for more.

That's an old number. The IMF's latest estimate is $7 trillion in 2022. However, "only" $1.3 trln of that are actual subsidies. The rest, $5.7 trln are the IMF's estimates of external costs related to the use of fossil fuels. (Note: the IMF does not estimate externalities related to production.)

A good font, too. I’ve been following Durán’s work for a few months so I think I know already a lot of the substance, which explains a lot of perplexing things going on today. But great to see he’s compiled it into a book.

It is. But I think even better — as in more chilling — would have been if he had used a German Gothic font. Something like this, or even older.

I was happy to hear the interviewees calling 🐂 💩 on the various claims about the supposed environmental superiority of single-use plastic bags compared with, e.g., canvas bags. Most of the life-cycle analyses used to justify these claims define the boundaries of their analyses WAY too narrowly.

I’ve witnessed several people in various stages of dementia. I’m not a doctor, but what I see so far doesn’t comport with my experience. But, like many maladies, individual cases differ. I agree that more transparency on Trump’s medical exams would be nice but that we’re unlikely to get it.

I understand, and sympathize.

Thanks for all of this. I would guess that if a poll were taken “only” 30% of Americans (far too many, but a minority) — the MAGA hat wearers — would be open to the USA coercing Canada to merge with it (e.g., through economic pressure), and very few through military force.
