I have cancer. My mom has cancer. My aunt died of cancer this year. I can read books about cancer, but my line in the sand is BRCA books and I read one recently with no warnings and it SUCKED. Because the book was good! But I absolutely would not have chosen to read it.

Agreed that cancer is less morally weighted, but it’s certainly become very political. (If you haven’t read Tatiana Schlossberg’s essay, you should.) But I think the relatability of cancer is actually what makes it the worst choice as a stand in.

I have never actually minded the grief in all the books labeled romcoms, fwiw. Many films that are romcoms also have deep moments of grief. My objection was simply that there were no jokes to provide catharsis, which is where the art is.

I think you are right that Covid is probably the origin of so much of the grief romance we are getting, but I think a lot of it is also that many authors are aging? Which sounds silly, but I think is very true. Not sure I agree Covid is actually less fraught than cancer, but I see how you got there.

FWIW there are some very dark themes in the series that you might appreciate?

I hope for Wilson’s sake that you don’t have many baseball listeners because the comments on the Dodgers name will infuriate them.

I would be very curious to know the labeling criteria because it was an incredibly small number!
November 20, 2025 at 9:44 PM
I did look at one of the ones with a spine labels and it was from August this year, so it’s strange. I know the main library used to have a dedicated romance section before the remodel which I remember having heart labels, but that was ages ago and was MMPBs. I did check other non-Nora authors too!

I have pictures!! I did find a few random ones with a fiction/author label but mostly it was only genre ones. Interestingly, though there were horror/mystery/fantasy/scifi spine labels there was NOT a romance one. Now, I was at a branch that didn’t have a romance section or MMPB but still.

I can go take some pictures of spines in the fiction section at Columbus Metro if you want! I check it out in physical form infrequently so I honestly can’t remember what they look like.
