I experience a lot of news three times over - once from rats before the story 'breaks', once from the news, and once from more general interesting youtubers and the like exploring it. It's odd, and an impressive example of how filtered my media landscape ends up being.

www.astralcodexten.com/p/fascism-ca... A good post. Personally, my intuitive reconciliation is something like "fascists should generally overcome the presumption of liberalist regularity in politics" - that doesn't mean that it's good to do violence, but libertarian no harm principles stop applying

I reread www.astralcodexten.com/p/half-an-ho... like a bedtime story, sometimes. I don't live in the this sort of place in the physical world, but I always end up self-selecting online to the idea of a place like this, and that feels if anything even more fitting. Sometimes cry to it too...

I get the desire for a pivot to big tent politics for the dems, and I see why it makes some sense as a significant angle for e.g. senate races and maybe even the presidential campaign, but the reality is that in the meantime trump is doing his revenge tour and there's no moderate way to stop that.

One thing I find deeply frustrating is that partially paywalled posts on e.g. substack will often have citation links in the free part, but the link to the cititation won't work without subscribing - it makes the content so much less useful and is just a moment of frustration every time it happens.

Sometimes I feel like the SCOTUS cases end up in a sort of superpositional state re: standing - that no matter who brings the case it'll be the wrong one, and that it'll be remanded down to lower courts or just kicked down the road to help with the appearance of regularity and to avoid 'bad law'.

I wish more people groked that you're allowed to be sad about someone dying even if you don't care for the person who died - People dying is bad! People don't like the fuss around someone dying nearby (socially or physically), and people who do crimes often ruin their lives in doing so.

I feel like people who talk about faith / purpose being impossible to find in CurrentYear just haven't met a capital C community or Charismatic person that genuinely took interest in them - the qualitative difference in elite performance is so large and the sorting effects makes different worlds ime

I have a felt sense for all of the following:
depressogenic environment, depressed, tired, emotionally exhausted, out of brain, out of fucks, out of salience", anhedonia, avolition, sad, weary, unenergized, spent, wrecked.
All of these feel like distinct (if v. correlated) factors to me. (1/2)

Misc. discourse thought.
1) american chattel slavery wasn't 'uniquely bad'
2) american chattel slavery was really really terrible and worse than many other forms of ~contemporaneous slavery.

Dumb question: Is there any reason why AI platforms don't have a tool that automatically checks the URLs it mentions for citations for at least existence? Feel like it would probably be even feasible to do a quick analysis thing in a deep research project - put the webpage in context and see (1/2)

I feel like there's (at least) two parallel universes of AI progress - one that's about how close in the best case scenario for AI is it to being able to do the work of marginal workers, and one that's about how much AI is close to being better than humans in a wide array of fields. (1/?)

I wish people used checks and balances more. I personally like to some extent 'votes of no confidence' being a relatively regular thing, and think that e.g. there being no active tradition of e.g. judicial impeachment means that there's little room for narrowly targeted solutions to 'over reach'.

I wish people in AI were more comfortable saying "Current gen LLMs, especially free tier ones suck a lot and constantly generate garbage, yes, but that doesn't mean they aren't improving rapidly or that they don't enable crazy things just because they can e.g. solve scale and the blank page problem"

Every time I see an AI video demonstration, I...
1. Instantly get strong uncanny valley vibes that makes me dismiss the current version as not terribly convincing for a billion reasons.
2. Spend maybe 15 seconds to spot a few continuity bugs.

One thing I find deeply confusing about Konami's current design trends is that they print keep printing archetypal locks on cards in the best decks... and then not designing them to be particularly impactful and putting in ways around it and ways to make it utterly invisible. (1/?)

One big thing that's keeping me from playing yugioh is that I can't stand playing 'bad [deck]'. I'm okay in principle with playing a budget deck, but it feels like there's no such thing as a deck that is 100% how you would want it to be that is also reliably cheap - the mulcharmies exist!
