Agency - my word of the year for 2026 (even though I don't subscribe to the practice in principle!). Important for me in my personal life and at work. But most important for those who want to take action on today's world. It's the only way.

Ireland is led by a center-right coalition. We in the USA think they are an extreme left country (because they shockingly care about human beings).

Our left is a mile right of Ireland. Our right is off the charts.

If you're wondering why the other US party isn't fighting back in a useful way...

32 people died in ICE custody and 11 people have been shot by ICE agents under the current administration.

It took that 11th for the outrage to gain some traction (for now).

If you're wondering why it took until now, as I was, look up the details. Better late than never, but so very telling.

Reminder of the 7+ decades of occupation, oppression, apartheid, and genocide of the Palestinian people - worth noting that we're nearly at 500 people murdered in military attacks... during the so-called ceasefire. And you wonder why our government thinks murdering a woman in MN is no biggie?

There's a word for when people say that law and social constructs don't apply to them and they get to live by their own personal moral code.

Anarchy.

Though there needs to be a stronger word, given that we know that far too many people don't even bother to raise their moral bar off the ground.

@sammyobeid.bsky.social was fantastic in San Jose tonight. Brought a few maths jokes too.

But the food at SJ Improv - my goodness, when Sammy said we should let Tucker and Candace keep cooking, I didn’t realize they were working the kitchens. Beyond awful. How do you screw up chips/fries so badly?

I've often noted US propaganda tells you the rest of the world is evil and out to get us, and we're the only good guys saving everyone. Gen X embraces this mindset particularly deeply.

Yesterday, I came across this 1983 ad. Aimed at children. Explains so much. www.instagram.com/reels/DRIpAr...
Honorable History on Instagram: "In 1983, during Cold War tensions, a chilling animated PSA aired once in the US. Santa’s sleigh flies over a town when a missile locks on and blasts it apart in flames...
In 1983, a chilling animated Public Service Announcement (PSA) aired in the US, warning against the dangers of nuclear war. The animation, which showed Santa's sleigh being destroyed by a missile, lef...

Excited to break my live stand-up duck with @sammyobeid.bsky.social in a couple of weeks. Online clips are quality, assume the entire show will be a non-stop riot (of the laughing kind) with a message. Exactly what top notch comedy should be. Question is, can he top my (not original) maths joke?

Much was asked and answered in this conversation between two new ball bowlers, both of whom had a good slow bouncer 🤣 #cricket

I have the privilege of conducting a fireside chat with Sir Andy Roberts this evening. Any of my three followers have thoughts on things I should ask him that are off the beaten path? #cricket #legend #twobouncers #westindies

How bad must the Epstein world have been for a monarchy which should have been abolished a long time ago to need to chuck out one of their own because he’d make them look bad?Think of everything this monarchy has done over time before you answer. Genocides never bothered them. This does.

It's somewhat discombobulating that Ronald Reagan, the President who essentially bequeathed us the NRA and gun violence, massive and continually worsening inequality (especially of income), and for good measure ensured the long term mess that is Air Traffic Control, is now a poster-child for good.

on the good side - a great sporting w/e. Flavour in the pitch in Perth. United win at Anfield to an eerie silence from my Liverpool supporting friends and acquaintances. And a needlessly tense and exciting one-wicket relegation-saving win on the cricket field. I don't get the winning run too often!

occupy, oppress, and murder for the best part of a century. should the victims ever fight back, go harder. until it becomes genocidal. then declare a "ceasefire", which you can subsequently unilaterally pause and resume whenever you kill some people. "Settler" violence ok anytime, of course. Genius.

Quite the telling headline...
October 14, 2025 at 9:37 PM
ceasefire (which is an amusing concept in a one sided genocidal attack anyway). 9 Palestinians killed today, and only half the aid being allowed through. Would be shocking if this turned out to be a political stunt in which the people suffering continue to suffer, eh?

Things we're celebrating that reflect how low the bar is today

1. Nobel Peace Prize committee choosing not to endorse fascism and despotic tyranny.
2. Humans returning to death and destruction site while 36 are injured by military and settlers in the West Bank, because that's just normal life.
October 10, 2025 at 10:17 PM
"we have a ceasefire agreement for a war that we are unilaterally waging but we're not going to cease fire yet because our cabinet hasn't formally approved it" is definitely a sign of good intentions.

(after ignoring 75+ years of oppression, apartheid, occupation, and everything else, of course)
October 9, 2025 at 8:17 PM
The power of decades of propaganda is incredible. I’ll celebrate things when there’s no oppression, occupation, apartheid, and genocide. Human history suggests I shouldn’t buy confetti just yet.

A Sophie’s Choice ultimatum does not a peace plan make. Not sure you can undo 75 years of oppression with “do what I say or you all die.” Next up, Putin and Xi will chat and deliver a peace plan to Ukraine.

You really have to be pretty curmudgeonly not to feel really good for Haseeb Hameed leading Notts to the title as captain and with the bat. Nice redemption story even if he may still never play Test cricket again. #cricket

remarkable to have university presidents (!) preach that we should encourage and embrace debate and free speech, but only if it's the debate and free speech that they and/or their donors and/or the government agrees with. I wonder what we'd say were this happening in another country?

Uber Eats Delivery on $50 of food with a $20 off coupon costs $60 after taxes, fees, and tip. Insane. Which is why I don't use it, and why they keep sending me nice coupons. And on top of that the food will show up lukewarm.

Solution: order from nearby, pick up yourself, save money, eat hot food.

My signature, whilst theoretically constant, has evolved enough that HSBC has been holding my Hong Kong account hostage for 20 years and won’t release the funds to me because the signatures don’t match. This observation independent of any current public discussion of signature verisimilitude.
