So if you're a boardgame designer, please involve more people who don't look and think like you. Playtest with people with physical impairments, get previews from people from other cultures, hear more voices. (8/8)

This goes further than non-white previewers. You need to be involving a range of people at all stages of your design process. People from other cultures, other religions, people with physical impairments, younger people, older people, neurodiverse people, etc.. (7/8)

In business, diversity matters. Period. Cis white men don't make up the majority of the world, so if you make a product with only cis white men in mind, you are shooting yourself in the foot. It baffles me that a lot of boardgame companies don't seem to realise this. (6/8)

We gave an artist a brief for a card. He refused to paint the design we wanted, because he's a practising Muslim and the woman would've been too scantily clad. We changed the brief to more modest clothing, as well as making sure the rest of the cards were modest. (5/8)

In Chroma Arcana, the hand size was originally 8. It wasn't until we playtested it with kids that we realised it was difficult to hold. If kids struggle to hold 8 cards, someone with a physical impairment might also struggle, so we dropped it down to 6. (4/8)

If a left-handed person was more involved in the design process, this issue probably would've been spotted before it went to production. And it's the same for boardgames - how many issues are not being spotted because the entire design process takes part in an echo chamber? (3/8)

It's 2007. YouTube has launched on iOS, and 5-10% of uploaded videos are upside-down. Why? Because the app was designed by a right-handed team who expected the phone to be rotated a certain way, not thinking about how a left-handed person might use the phone differently. (2/8)

It's an area control/worker placement hybrid, with comically evil factions trying to steal the heart of the continent 🙂 It's set in a fantasy world, in the same universe as our card game that's coming out next year (Chroma Arcana)!
