A super paper, congrats!

To summarise: light pollution simultaneously impacts movement ecology in two very different nocturnal species by inhibiting activity and masking important visual compass cues. Very happy that this is out and that many collaborators-turned-friends are in the author list 😀🕷️🦋 (5/5)

3. this masking of the skylight polarization pattern increases in magnitude with increasing light pollution radiance and, by modelling their visual systems, we show that this is likely to impact the detection of the pattern by moths and spiders, particularly in brightly lit areas (4/5)

2. light pollution masks the skylight polarization pattern, an important cue for navigation, by reducing its spatial and temporal distribution and degree of polarization - critically the greatest masking effect occurred in the first hours after sunset just as the animals begin their excursions (3/5)

We show that: 1. light pollution delays or prevents the initiation of nocturnal excursions shortly after sunset, a critical period when many behaviours commence, and that broad-spectrum light had a greater impact (although long wavelength-shifted light also had a strong negative effect) (2/5)

It was great to debut this little project looking at the effects of a visual stressor (light pollution) on acoustic behaviour (stridulation) in freshwater invertebrates

Caterpillars are great for neuroethology research, and they also stand to benefit from being studied in this way! It was a pleasure to write this with friends Callum McLellan (@bristolbiosci.bsky.social), @rochellemeah.bsky.social, @benitoexplains.bsky.social and @laurensr.bsky.social 👀👂⚡🧪🔥🌎〰️
