7. Fave character: O Ae Sun, played by the incredible IU, in When Life Gives You Tangerines. Spoiler: this won’t be the last time this one shows up on this list.

6. A drama you dropped: Bad and Crazy - with Lee Dong Wook and Wi Ha Joon, I had such high hopes. But… it just kind of sucked. I'm so sorry. I love them both still.

5. A visually beautiful drama: This is a tough one because almost all Kdramas are absolutely beautiful. But I think I might have to give this to a Japanese one: Romantics Anonymous. Between the interiors and the chocolates, it was ridiculously pretty.

3. Fave actor discovered: Gong Woo - and I know I am ridiculously late to this party. I also can’t say I didn’t know him before this year, but this is the year I started really paying attention after seeing how great he was in The Trunk, and began seeking out his back catalog. Yes I watched Goblin!

1. Which country’s dramas have you watched the most in 2025? South Korea of course. [pic: When the Phone Rings, one of the first watches of the year]
2. Fave actress discovered: Lee Sun Bin - she was just so delightful and natural in The Potato Lab, which is a favourite from this year.

I completely forgot to start the End of the Year Drama ‘challenge’, which I enjoyed recapping last year. So here’s the first 7 days 🧵 catch-up, with a few recommendations. Will post the list at the end for the 4-5 other followers that are Kdrama junkies, or maybe there are more and you are hiding!

The contented (& slightly tired) face of a newly minted Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, who also managed to score a cancellation with her wonderful hair stylist. This recognition is a lovely reminder that excellence in scholarship & research do not always happen in ‘research active’ posts…

It’s a year since I first held my book, & serendipitously I got a lovely letter from @yalebooks congratulating me for my @thesahgb award. I’d like to thank them back, because Yale was a dream to work with. I feel very fortunate and couldn’t be happier that it’s lived up to expectations.

My last 3 follows are making me think that initial academic surge is waning a bit…

Fantastic day at #LTAX listening to our brilliant @uofglasgow.bsky.social undergrads present research all kinds of research, from sustainable fashion to solar flares; viruses, Russian manuscripts, Dark Patterns, Cystic Fibrosis and more! Can’t way for day 2 tomorrow. www.talkaboutx.net/2025-talks

I’ve almost missed #worldbookday - here I am at almost 11pm thinking, oh yeah, I put a book into the world almost a year ago! Thanks to all who’ve supported it.

First day of term - home time for me but the Reading Room was still buzzing into the evening. @uofglasgow.bsky.social

I need to make an effort to pop down to Giffnock and explore its wee cafes.

Spotted in the wild @vadundee.bsky.social today. But more importantly you have 2 days to catch Kimonos, HIGHLY recommend!

#EYDC2024 Day 31: through this challenge I’ve learned about loads of #Kdramas I didn’t know, & 1 stood out on everyone’s lists. So I signed up for Viki to watch, and so glad I did. Lovely Runner is my favourite for the year. ❤️ timeslips & this one is innovative & wonderful! Will rewatch for sure!

I discovered this amazing world of stories - & culture - that kept my brain focused. I highly recommend checking out Korean telly (& yes other Asian too but I’m a K-addict). ‘Drama’ is misleading for the uninitiated - something for everyone! My recommend starter is ‘Would You Like A Cup of Coffee?’

#EYDC2024 Day 29: The 2025 drama I’m excited for is right around the corner: When the Stars Gossip. Why? Lee Min-ho. Gong Hyo-Jin. Han Ji-eun. Oh Jung-se. Plus an amazing supporting cast. High hopes but won’t watch until it’s all released for a lovely binge fest.
December 29, 2024 at 6:21 PM
#EYDC2024 Day 26: Like some others my pick for disappointing drama is Frankly Speaking. Started out well but then it was like, he’s not speaking THAT frankly, is he? Waste of a great cast, though I still enjoyed it.

#EYDC2025 Day 25 (belated): My favourite romance (lots to pick from) was prob Love Next Door. But Atypical Family too. I can’t pick just one.
December 26, 2024 at 8:57 AM
#EYDC2024 Day 24: was always going to be hardest given my costume interests. Adore all Joseon but I’ll cheat & pick Gyeonseong Creature, I only watched this year - swoonworthy vintage fashion & slight Steampunk vibe + A Virtuous Business for 80s looks that told each character’s story brilliantly!

My favourite seasonal meme
December 23, 2024 at 10:56 PM
#EYDC2024 Day 23: An innovative drama is also the one I think is the most underrated. Chicken Nugget was brilliantly weird in every way and I enjoyed it immensely. Why aren’t more people fans?
December 23, 2024 at 9:43 PM
#EYDC2024 Day 22: I’m pretty sure When the Phone Rings deserves the hype but I’m waiting to watch until all episodes are out. So my pick is The Atypical Family, as great as everyone says.
