Should we try to understand AI's economic anxiety first?

That strikes me as an underpants-gnomes kind of argument, where you posit a starting condition and an end goal and skip the load-bearing parts of the plan. Is Soares' logic that faulty? From re-reading @davekarpf.bsky.social's thread reviewing his book, it seems that it is.

His thesis for what happens after AI achieves a not-clearly-defined level of superintelligence, as I understand it: "The default outcome is everybody on Earth dies" because "happy healthy free people having a good time, that's just not part of the most efficient solution for almost any problem."

Years ago, I remember you describing Twitter as "friend radio." At the time, I thought that phrase fit Facebook better; now, I think it fit what Facebook used to be.

(In a very Washington moment, looking across the street at the FTC's building on Pennsylvania Avenue reminded me to post about this.)

You reminded me of a friend who pays for a WSJ subscription--in print, no less!--and then keeps sharing stuff from garbage sites like ZeroHedge.

I have to tip my cap to Griffin for being the one speaker here to bring up how hollowed out CISA is today--40% of its positions are unfilled, she reminded the audience. (Nakasone was not happy about that.) Very good call by the organizers to include her in the program.

Some other bits of back-and-forth from this panel...

Griffin: Do our information-security adversaries fear us?
Nakasone: "I think they don't fear us as much as they need to."

Griffin: Are you still concerned about TikTok?
Nakasone: "Jen, who controls the algorithm?"

Ugh, you may have given me a new deadline-avoidance project...

Next question: How many airports have you used? I do track that, courtesy of a friend setting up an informal competition.

How long have you been logging your flights, and how much backfilling did you need to do when you started on this project?

Does that make Sam Altman Dr. Strangelove in this scenario? And does that then leave Zuck as... Premier Kissov?

I'm not lovin' it.

Pretty sure he's Canadian by birth - he grew up in Novia Scotia. But you're welcome to start planning the Randy Clarke for DOT Secretary Committee, even if people here would hate to lose him.
