There’s this spec idea that I’ve been trying to crack since 2021 that I might’ve(?!) finally just cracked. Future me: please confirm that this version works and your manager isn’t furious when he reads.

The 2025 version of having a nightmare about being in high school forgetting there was a test is having a nightmare about Kareem Rahma approaching you on the Subway and you not being able to think of a take.

Amazing LA trip. Met up with some amazing writer/exec friends, finished a new feature, and signed with a new manager! Now for all the notes...

LA bound tomorrow to see writer friends old and new and meet with an exec friend to discuss the future of a show I wrote. This business is hard, but goddamn do the people make it worth it.

So many amazing movies to choose from. Changed this list like seven times and this version upsets me the least.

Went to one of my usual coffee shops to work on the latest spec only to find a new Rob Pattinson/Zoe Kravitz film shooting next door. And man, there’s just something about seeing a set in action that just makes you want to sling some f*ing words.

Maybe the real Max is the HBO we made along the way.

Everyone's always talking about how this meeting could have been an email. But no one's talking about how this email could have been an SNL gif.

Six months ago, I hadn't seen a single Billy Wilder movie. Now I'm that guy who won't shut up about how remarkable and singular the man is.

Coogler’s a bafflingly good writer/director. He’s swinging at pitches nobody else would even try to hit and is just obliterating them. Man deserves every penny of the deal he got.

Some people say it's the hope that kills you. But writers know that it's the hope that makes you obsessively check your inbox for good news.

Today, I learned that despite being born in late August, I don't "give Virgo" and apparently instead "give Leo", which is, according to my students, "not good or bad, just interesting."

Someone once said, "If you love what you do, you'll never have to work a day in your life."

That person never wrote a screenplay.

You know you're a writer when someone sends you a document and your first thought is, "Damn, that's a good font choice."

Severance finale rocked, but honestly, I'm just thinking about how happy I am for Dan Erickson. This business is so hard, and I'm so glad he's fully getting his flowers nearly 10 years after writing the pilot. Also, what more can we say about @benstiller.redhour.com?

Get to teach some high schoolers screenwriting basics tomorrow. Should I mention the “existential dread” part of doing this?

16-year-old me dreamed of winning an Oscar.
30-year-old me dreams of having a $5m feature premiere at Sundance, not get critically panned, and earn back its budget plus 5-10%

Sean Baker has always been one of our most empathetic, humanist filmmakers, so seeing him win big tonight and use his platform to support independent cinemas really made the universe feel legitimately in balance for a moment there.

Nothing like spending a Saturday night searching through hundreds of images of Jake Gyllenhaal for the right one to put in your pitch deck.

This. Any project I've even written that's gotten industry traction was written because I spent hours upon hours of literally staring at the ceiling while listening to the right music.
A lot of people confuse writing with typing.

Writing isn’t typing.

It’s the entire process and yes that includes going for a walk or rearranging things in your office.
Sometimes you sit down to write and instead you think or cut or rewrite or unwrite. That’s okay. That’s a productive day because all of those are part of the process. Keep going.

The writing in Severance is great for so many reasons, but one that not enough people talk about is how much it trusts its audience. It doesn't dumb things down; it just fully commits to the contract with its audience that if you trust it in full, it will deliver.

SORRY, BABY is an absolutely breathtaking meditation on trauma, friendship, and hope. Eva Victor is brilliant behind the camera and impossible to look away from in front of it. It may only be February, but I'll be damned if this doesn't go down as one of the best films of '25.
