It's official! The Hidden Rivers of Florida series debuts in a couple of months.
Have you ever wondered what lies inside the beautiful springs of North Florida?
Do you question what would make people risk their lives venturing into these portals beneath the earth?

Control is often misunderstood.
It isn't about dominance.
It's about knowing when pushing will make things worse.

Stories are born in places like this - where light thins, choices narrow, and every decision echoes longer than expected.
This is where my fiction begins.

Progress over broken floor is quiet and deliberate.
The final glimpse isn’t a reward. It’s a moment of evaluation.
Technical takeaway: Neutral buoyancy with slightly elevated trim keeps you clear of unstable floor and preserves visibility.

In fiction, there’s a moment when everything changes.
Not with noise or violence, but with a narrowing.

This is the moment when momentum has to stop.
As the passage tightens and the ceiling drops, speed becomes the enemy.
Calm breathing, clean trim, and patience matter more than progress.
This is where divers decide whether to continue or turn the dive.
What would you do here?

North Florida has been dry for far too long. While drought conditions can be good for diving, they aren't so good for the health of the aquifer. A storm like this helps, but only so much.

This is the moment when every cave diver slows down.
Approaching a restriction isn’t about courage — it’s about control.
Breathing, trim, awareness… everything tightens before the passage does.
This is where poor decisions get exposed.

Would you continue, or turn the dive here?

With a cold front rolling in, I’d much rather be in Cozumel.
Sun overhead. Clear water below. Jungles hiding secrets beneath their roots.
If you’re stuck in the path of the blizzard, you can still slip away—at least virtually. Dive Beneath the Jungle of Cozumel & experience the adventure.

Warm, tropical thoughts to those suffering through the blizzard. It won't hit Florida until early Monday morning.

Not sure if these are oysters or angel wings. Not brave enough to find out. I'm leaning toward angel wings since they are growing from an old decaying tree stump. Would you eat them?

Oh, and they were going near the site of a Florida spring.

Above the surface, winter tightens its grip.
Below it, the water remains clear, calm, and constant.

As much of the US braces for freezing temperatures this week, this scene is a reminder: the cold shapes the world in ways we can see… and in ways hidden beneath the surface. Stay warm out there.

The portal to The Hidden Rivers of Florida aren't always beneath clear inviting waters. Sometimes they're beneath dark murky waters. In Florida, there's a chance there might be a sentry at that portal. A large, prehistoric sentry that likes to grab victims in its jaws & go into a death roll.

The weekend is almost here. Unfortunately, the weather forecast isn't great for many in the US. Stay safe! Here's a picture of a sea star (aka starfish) to make you feel better.

Not so hidden river of Florida. The water in this river does come from a hidden river, though.

This is the first time I've seen the water level so low at Morrison Spring. I've never seen the cypress knees to the right not surrounded by water.
No diving today. Just exploring the area. Might have to come back with dive gear to get some photos and videos reenacting scenes from Beyond the Grate.

We don't have green moray eels (Gymnothorax funebris), but the American eel (Anguilla rostrata) can be found in The Hidden Rivers of Florida. Joey and Lindsey also encounter American eels in Beyond the Grate.

Throwback Thursday - Last year when Florida had snow...several inches of snow...
The sago did survive.

An outside view of the well I posted a photo of earlier today. And yes, we did dive it.

Fun little cave to dive. Years ago, a friend of mine and I were heading up the Chipola in my boat to dive Maunds. He starts telling me about his last dive in Gator Hole. He arrived at Hunter Fish Camp boat ramp one cool winter morning and scootered across the pond.
