i think using the Metroid games as the base for what is/isn't a metroidvania is usually fine but Fusion being linear & mainline throws a huge wrench in it. games that are borderline metroidvanias like Control, Cave Story or Blaster Master fit the definition as well if not better than Fusion. weird!

i am soooo fascinated by very early games and specifically how there's a disconnect between what something literally is and how the player is intended to fill in the gaps and create their own version of whatever they're playing. when you play an old rpg for example everyone has their own individual-
