This is so good. Melly would have known Pete’s dad from the jazz scene, so to him Pete would have been his mate’s possibly misguided but precocious son (hence the self-conscious “I’m actually into Charlie Parker” quote), and Melly was the older guy trying to understand what Pete’s dad wouldn’t.

Will just say that if you are a dual national (which I’m not), Border Force will advise you to use your EU passport going out (easier) but your UK passport coming in (as you don’t have Settled Status because you don’t need it). As a result they can never know the correct numbers.
