New Orleans has seen a significant reduction in crime this year, with the city’s murder rate falling to lows not seen since the 1970s after a pandemic-era spike, according to local police data. As of Sept. 6, overall crime was down 19 percent from a year ago, those figures show. In Baton Rouge, which has a Republican mayor, the statistics were more mixed. As of Sept. 9, there were eight fewer homicides in the city this year compared with a year ago, but robberies and assaults over the last six months were on the rise, according to local police data.

In early July, Mr. Jensen met with Mr. Patel to urge him to protect Mr. Giardina, whom he believed to be unfairly targeted. He suggested it would be “inexcusably cruel” to add to the burden of a man who was caring for his dying wife, according to the lawsuit. Mr. Patel handed him a challenge coin, passed out three cigars, told him he was “crushing it” and ushered him out of the office. He fired Mr. Giardina about a month later.

If passed, SB 323 would ban all abortion, stripping away exceptions for rape, incest, and fatal fetal abnormalities. Women who end their pregnancies could be charged with murder and subject to the death penalty. (Yes, really—if you need some background on ‘equal protection’ bills, click here.) Under this bill, patients with life-threatening pregnancies would be denied standard abortion procedures—instead, they’d be forced into labor or c-sections, even when their pregnancy is too early for the fetus to survive. The bill is also a shocking attack on free speech. Referring someone for an abortion would be a felony, as would sharing information about how to get an abortion. Pro-choice websites would be illegal, and South Carolina attorneys tell AED that even giving someone gas money to get an out-of-state abortion could land you in prison for thirty years. I’m not even done yet! In addition to the fact that abortion providers would be violating RICO or racketeering laws, it would be illegal to work for or associate with abortion providers—unless you’re ready to spend a decade in prison. The bill also mandates that the anti-abortion propaganda video ‘Baby Olivia’ be shown in public school classrooms, and that schools that the Attorney General could compel schools that refuse to comply.

It's wild to watch people who don't believe in climate change because it contradicts their view that only God can control the climate repeatedly blame the effects of climate change on a secret cabal of weather magicians.

But the cash gusher from entertainment had slowed to a trickle by the time Mr. Trump entered politics, and after he entered the White House in 2017, the company fell into a dry spell for new licensing deals. Some of that was because the Trump Organization pledged not to sign new foreign deals in an attempt to avoid conflicts of interest. After Mr. Trump left office in January 2021, the Trump Organization did not announce a major new branding agreement until late 2022 — for a golf resort in Oman. The spigot of foreign branding deals did not fully turn back on until after Mr. Trump clinched the Republican nomination and a second term seemed within reach. After that, nine deals were announced in rapid succession: one each for developments in Vietnam and Serbia, two in India and five on the Arabian Peninsula, including a golf resort in Qatar, a residential tower in Jeddah, another tower in Dubai and two more in Riyadh.

As donors try to assess their next moves in the mayoral race, one of the biggest donors to Andrew Cuomo's super PAC, the investor Mark Gorton, said he is likely to back Mamdani. That is because of the support that Mamdani had gotten from Brad Lander, who Gorton said he ranked first. "I feel like people misunderstood my $250,000 for Cuomo for real enthusiasm," Gorton said in an interview. "It was basically, 'Oh, looks like Cuomo is coming back. We don't want to be shut out. Let's try and get on his good side? That's kind of how things work with Cuomo. It's sad political pragmatism. I wish we lived in a world where those sort of things were not useful things to do."

Turns out the "illegal" pregnant woman was a US citizen, and she's since been hospitalized.
