I've only heard good things about this and 100 pages in and I can see why!

Morning! I've just started The Children of Gods and Fighting Men by Shauna Lawless.

The final half hour of this film is excellent, from the set piece battle to the final showdown. The staging of this is excellent throughout and I mean, the score! The film is elevated with the sprinkling of humour throughout. I did flag a bit in the middle, maybe that's just a me thing.

Book 52 - The Queue by Basma Abdel Aziz

Published in 2013, it's hard not to compare what she's writing with what was happening in Egypt during the Arab Spring. A man is shot, seeking approval for an operation and has to queue for it. Orwellian elements and deadpan humour and community.

This is a film that doesn't shy away from the brutality warfare & the civilian casualties involved. It's clearly an anti-colonial film, but at the same time, it doesn't glorify what the resistance is doing. Through the oppression and violence of colonial rule, it only breeds more violence.

Ooft! This was a tough one to sit through. The film is predominantly told from the perspective of a donkey and its first owner Marie, as both are helpless at defending themselves against the abuse thrown in their direction. It's honestly painful to watch at times and perhaps too much so.

Book 51 - The Five by Hallie Rubenhold

An excellent biography of each of the five victims of Jack the Ripper. Whilst there is a lot of conjecture, it's followed to its logical conclusion for the most part. Immersive and informative. A must read if you're interested in this era.

Book 50 - Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
First time I've read out of publication order, but you can tell just how much Christie changed as a writer. A good 40% is given to setting up the backstories, which I really appreciated and the sense of place, which is often missed from her.

Book 49 - The Tainted Cup by Robert Jackson Bennett

An excellent genre-blender of fantasy and murder mystery. The stakes are high, the world building is weird, unique and immersive and the two main characters are a wonderful duo. The dialogue is almost akin to the show Sherlock.

Morning! I'm around halfway through Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie.

I'll not pretend, I probably understood half of that, but my main takeaway is that is that it's one woman talking to her subconscious about the deeds of her life? Either way, this is some of the best cinematography I have ever seen and the performances are phenomenal. A rewatch is a must.

Yeah it's been on mine for a while as well. Pretty much since the hype started for it.

Two chapters in and I'm loving the dynamic between Ana and Din!
