The Sydney had last been seen limping away, heavily damaged, barely under control and burning fiercely. Hits from the Sydney had crippled the Kormoran and she was then abandoned, sinking after fires detonated her mines. [3/3] (Images: Wikimedia Commons) #RoyalAustralianNavy #WW2 #NavalHistory

The Germans reported that the Sydney had approached the Kormoran too closely and received several devastating salvoes from her, destroying her bridge and gun director tower, damaged her forward gun turrets, and starting fires. She had also been hit by several torpedoes fired by the Kormoran. [2/3]

Unable to resist or even move, the Romney had little option but to surrender, and the Dutch took possession. At the court martial the loss was blamed on the thick fog but also on errors by the two pilots, who were fined and imprisoned. [3/3] (Image: National Maritime Museum) #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

However, she was clearly badly damaged, with water continually entering despite constant pumping. Daylight on 19 November revealed that she had broken her back and could not be saved. During the morning a number of Dutch boats approached the crippled ship and demanded that she surrender. [2/3]

Several men were killed, including the schooner's commander, Lt Edward Crofton; according to contemporary reports 'His people and himself were cut to pieces' (Newcastle Courant, 1 June 1782). The schooner then seems to have been abandoned to sink by her captors. [3/3] #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The convoy finally steered for Spithead in order to take shelter from the weather, but the Hazardous missed stays, fell away and was carried inshore until she grounded and broke up. The court martial blamed the convoy's commander for not seeking shelter earlier. [2/2] #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

Five men on board the Vesuvius were killed. When the ship exploded it shook the whole town, breached the town walls, and shattered the roofs and windows of over 300 houses. Despite being very spectacular, however, it achieved little, as the damage was rapidly repaired. [3/3] #RoyalNavy #NavalHistory

The intention was to devastate the port by detonating the ship once she had entered the harbour. The Vesuvius was sent in with a small crew in the aftermath of a heavy bombardment but ran aground some distance from the intended detonation point. The fuse was lit but she exploded prematurely. [2/3]
