The report reveals a stark lack of planning for the needs of vulnerable groups.

It notes the disproportionate deaths experienced by disabled people, and that for months too little data existed to build understanding of this.

Uxbridge Road is a nightmare to navigate for blind and partially sighted people. To walk down the street, pedestrians contend with a sea of trip hazards and obstacles, including advertising boards, street clutter and illegally parked cars. 2/4

MPs tried out practical tools that support people with sight loss in the home and workplace, learned about mobility training, and heard directly from people with sight loss and vision rehabilitation specialists about how vision rehab can change lives.

This week we met up with staff from PJA offices in Birmingham, who participated in a guided walk and discussed the importance of inclusive street design with us.

At an event in Parliament this week, launching a new Disability Policy Centre report on accessible voting, we stressed the need for audio and tactile voting solutions in polling stations to enable voters with sight loss to vote independently and in secret.

Collisions or near-misses with cars, e-scooters, bikes, or stationary obstacles can leave blind and partially sighted people less able or willing to go out because of the stress and distress they experience.

We asked blind and partially sighted people about their walking journeys, and 92% said they have had to walk into the road due to street obstacles. This is unacceptable. We’re calling for inclusive street design and a UK-wide law against pavement parking.

Our #InMyWay report highlights the dire need for improvement in making streets accessible. Only 9% of blind and partially sighted people strongly agree they feel safe making independent walking journeys.

This must change.
