The problem with inviting the unnatural into your life is it might decide to stay. Joe Hill: King Sorrow King Sorrow follows the lives and choices of 6 friends: Arthur, Colin, Donovan (Van), Donna, Allison (Allie) and Gwen, as they deal with the consequences of helping one of them find a way to escape from a blackmailer who threatens to harm a family member if they don't provide them with valuable items from a local college. Their method of escape, and revenge, comes with an unexpected price...one that each deals with differently as it pits their senses of morality with their desire for survival. Hill delivers a fantastic, superbly paced tale, full of surprises, twists and betrayals. No one was ever in charge of a dragon. Some snakes were too big to catch by the tail. The Kellough family has had a rough time of it lately and then young teenager Saoirse Kellough goes into the forest with her younger brother Jack, but only he returns. Is she just lost in the woods? A runaway? A victim of some sad accident? Or the latest in a series of girls who have gone missing in the area over the last 20 years? The Gardai (police) need Jack's help to understand what happened... but he's not talking. Therapist Freya Hemmings is enlisted to help unlock the secrets that Jack is keeping, in hopes of providing the Gardai with the information they need to find Saoirse and bring her home safely. As Freya slowly begins to gain Jack's trust, she learns more about the family's past and their difficulties, as well as the town's widespread fear of the forest. The more she learns, the more she questions what may have really happened. This story drew me in - Nolan's characters are compelling, intriguing and tragic - each with their own strengths, weaknesses and secrets. The rural setting is beautifully described and the nearby forest is almost a character in and of itself. Nolan delivers captivating characters, tense situations, lots of possibilities about what happened and who might have been involved, and a surprising ending. Recommended! While you don't have to read Chasing The Boogeyman before diving into the new book, you should strongly consider doing so, as there are references to people and events from the earlier book that will make more sense if you do. Here's my spoiler free review of the original. In this fictional "true crime" story Chizmar delivers a suspenseful, even more personal tale full of unexpected action, twists and turns. A series of gruesome killings straight out of The Boogeyman's playbook are happening, and the Chizmar family and friends are right in the middle of it all. The tale is told with a mix of current event reporting, interview transcripts, photos and recollections that build to a satisfying and completely unexpected conclusion.

Rather it is the story of anyone who's had to find their identity, deal with not being accepted for who they are, wrestle with their past, overcome both internal and external obstacles, and find the strength to move forward. Erica is fascinating - a protagonist with challenges and a surprising strength of character. Someone who is able to do what's needed while recognizing and owning the cost. The story presents an interesting mythology in the appearance of Lobodomar Devorador, recounted against the backdrop of a city unknowingly falling to the coming of the Dark, with seemingly few beings aware of and able to defend against it. I hope that there will be more stories set in this world and that we learn more about the evil of the old gods that Erica battles. === Thanks to author R.J. Tyler's latest novel, M.I.R.E.: Memory Implantation for Rehabilitation and Empathy, is a visceral, grab you by the throat and squeeze, experience. In this medical thriller monsters are all too human, and the line between hero and villain is thin. I'll warn you up front. This novel is graphic - Tyler pulls no punches in his descriptions of physical and sexual violence throughout the story. This is intended, I think, to ensure the reader has a more than casual understanding of what far too many victims experience. Brilliant brain surgeon, Dr. William Stonehurst, has discovered he can cure PTSD by removing the memory of the traumatic event - a blessing for veterans and many others who find their lives severely limited by the trauma they re-experience. His research also leads him to the understanding that those removed memories can be stored and later implanted in another person's brain. He suspects these memories can trigger PTSD in violent criminals and generate empathy for their victims, preventing future attacks. But Dr. Stonehurst has a secret - his research was inspired by his twin sister who committed suicide due to trauma she continued to experience after being brutally assaulted and raped. He also has a desire to exact vengeance upon her attacker, John Kiel, who got away with the crime on a technicality. When the M.I.R.E. procedure gets approved as a sentencing option for repeat, violent offenders, he may finally get his chance for revenge. Tyler doesn't shy away from the moral questions raised by M.I.R.E. To say that many of the characters are not nice is an understatement, but do the ends justify the means? Is it appropriate knowingly inflict PTSD, even on violent criminals, in hopes of preventing future crimes? Is this justice or vengeance... or both? Rumors spread that the abductions are part of an alien invasion as reports surface of people literally vanishing into thin-air. As the world around him devolves into chaos, John wants nothing more than to bring his family back together, and joins with a small group of misfits who have a risky and radical plan to find and battle the abductors and bring their loved ones home. With Veil, Janz has crafted a tension-filled story that evolves into an action-packed thriller, with strong and interesting characters and skillfully applied echoes of government and citizen reactions to the 2020 pandemic.
