I pay to remove ads from my media. I think this is part of the problem. Advertising isn’t really effective anymore. It just reinforces what we already buy or are interested in. This is what print did well. When I scan news sites I only see ads for things I’ve searched

Given the option I’ve eliminated all ads when possible so I’ve never seen an ad for this or any other movie this year. I think it’s one reason why no one’s going anymore.

We don’t talk enough about how the demise of traditional advertising has destroyed the movies. I’ve never heard of this movie but I would have if this was 1990. Film advertising used to saturate our daily lives. But today’s customized ads eliminate all serendipity to discovery new stuff.

The cineplex is going the way of the buggy whip. My one hope is that we’ll see palace come back as revival houses (like the Aero in LA). But unless movies return to cinematic principles, no one will pay top dollar to go to the movies.

Comparing this montage to the masterpiece created by Chuck Workman 40 years ago, you can see the decline in filmmaking. In the 80s, studios released 4-5 movies a week that were technically and artistically cinematic. This year? Maybe 5. Now we have small screen entertainments. Cinema is dying.
