Witnessing my sister’s flourishing, at a time when the world is so hostile to her very existence, reminded me that human rights must be about more than shielding against suffering.

Similarly, these volumes invite us to imagine international law as a space not only for safety, but for joy.

As human rights scholars and advocates, we often focus on protection from harm, violence, and repression. That work is essential—but it can narrow our gaze to the bleakest aspects of human experience. What we too often overlook is joy.
