Today in 1999, Trans Day of Remembrance is created to memorialize the murder of Black trans women Rita Hester and Chanelle Pickett.

I love people who harness themselves, an ox to a heavy cart,
who pull like water buffalo, with massive patience,
who strain in the mud and the muck to move things forward,

who do what has to be done, again and again.

The poem is from CIRCLES ON THE WATER, Alfred A. Knopf, 1973.

On this day in 1995, Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni environmental activists were executed by the state of Nigeria. Their legacy: challenging the power of Shell Oil and the military dictationship. Saro-Wiwa's final statement: "Neither imprisonment nor death can stop our ultimate victory."

Today in 1841, enslaved African people overpower crew of ship “The Creole” and navigate to the Bahamas where they achieve their freedom.

This two toned screen print is a tribute to those who perished during the Atlantic crossing during the slave trade.

It was so great seeing @rlmartstudio.bsky.social at the whistle thing in powderhorn yesterday.

He talked about this moment not being a dark tunnel at the end, but the darkness of a womb. We’re all in the darkness together, waiting for some new thing to be born after a hard labor.
