yes, in your example. But your example is unusual, I think. We often have EHR like never/ex/current and research data in pack-years and there isn't a function mapping distinct EHR categories to non-overlapping intervals in pack years.

-and is a really bad mathematical meme that has had a surprising comeback. It should have died out some time ago, because "multiplicand" and such are so unhelpful to everyone. My only concern really is that overdoing it will devalue the vitally important "estimand".
