Having grown up on 5 acres of former Gilroy prune land, I have now been inspired to pick up a book on the subject from the Gilroy Historical Society :)

My old university did that to control the squirrel population. People laughed, but it was much better than poison which works it's way up the food chain and can kill predatory birds etc.

My favorite is that on Apollo 12 the latch for the horizontal "hold-uppy stick" broke, so all the photos have Michale Collins grabbing the corner to hold it up, or it just droops there.

Your "can" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Sure , if money is no object. Last SpaceX numbers I saw with 100t capacity said 10 refueling missions for Starship HLS. 10 Starship rapid reuse flights way different than 10 disposable starships, even if you goose capacity by striping reentry needs.

None of the moon plans (which as tax payers we've paid Spacex for) work without rapid reuse for the multiple required refuleling missions to push a starship out to, down to and back from the moon, much less and of the purported Mars missions work without rapid reusability.

As you know, Shuttle was ultimately hamstrung by the refurb needed after reentry. Starship right on track for the same. Landing is good. Landing not melted to shit is neccessary.
