Leaving the forest they entered the Burn, the still charred remains of the other half of the Red Forest. The ash had gone gray in the decades since the fire had ripped through this half the forest. Here, it seemed like the world was divided into the dying and the charred remains of the dead.

“Mage!” Aldric called, and Elsa spun to see a skinkfolk staffcaster, charging the crystal of its staff with a crackling lightning spell. “On it!” She vaulted over a pair of skinkfolk with spiked clubs and dodged around Tyre, who competently defended herself with her saber. Elsa released a throat-stripping yell to grab the staffcaster’s attention and threw herself over the distance between them, making herself the target. A white-hot arc of lightning burned the air between them, buzzing through her sword. If she’d been wearing armor, it would have arced through her, and still it would have only been a tickle on her skin.

She peeked out into the main hall, which was still full lit by arrays of evertorches. A few cultists slept on old benches and pews, and more went about their business despite the hour. She had been right, there wasn’t much difference in the hour here, the evertorches burned twenty-four hours a day, and the sun didn’t reach this far underground anyway, other than perhaps a halo’s glow in the distance in one direction.

It was a bad season for skinkfolk, apparently. A large number of them were off-cycle in their mating seasons and the males were antagonizing. This close to lands under Bastion’s protection, too. The wastes continued to encroach. Assuming she wasn’t stripped of her position for what she was about to do, she would have to warn the King about how many skinkfolk were just a province away. There were enough existential threats from unnamed horrors, they didn’t need to be overrun by mundane threats on top of the uncanny.

Progress was slow. The snow the blizzard had dropped was light now, but would compact over the course of the day, which would be short this time of year. Six-foot deep drifts rose along the way. Dýrhildr let out a heavy breath that the wind carried away. Maybe she wasn’t making it home this winter, unless she found a boat heading up the coast she could hitch a ride on. That was likely to be a long wait.
