Each student has now submitted a novel project idea in the form of a grant proposal to Rise Up. This week we held two of our annual Study Sections where our Scientific Officers evaluate each proposal (158 total) and select projects to move forward with in each classroom.

These budding scientists will carry out hands-on projects over the course of four months, working in research teams and professional scientists, with protocols that are tailored to their grant proposal.

This prize is presented by Rise Up to one group of students at each school in our Life as a Scientist program. The prize is named in honor of Dr. Arnold Caplan, who was a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and a world renowned scientist in regenerative medicine.

Juan has been involved with Rise Up since the very beginning, and we are deeply grateful for his impact on our organization. Outside of the classroom and his work at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, Juan enjoys reading, fishing, gardening, biking, camping, and spending time with his two cats.

This honor celebrates a volunteer who consistently builds meaningful connections with students in our Life as a Scientist program. The award was created in honor of Janel Callon, co-founder and CEO of the Ichigo Foundation, which works to expand college access and success for students.

Students in our Life as a Scientist program spent the 2024–25 school year developing experiment ideas, pitching them in grant form, carrying out their projects in groups, and presenting results at our symposium. Now, they’ll soon become published authors!
