It wasn’t meant as one, and not to give that person too much credit, but some cover artists have tried to make it part of the canon in recent years, most notably the acapella group Pentatonix, who put it on one of their Christmas LPs and made it a modest hit again.

I know that oftentimes with this sort of thing, the artist's record label has to sign off on a singing performance, and sometimes they want more money than the studio is willing to pay. In certain cases, that means it becomes just a speaking role, and others result in a singing double.
