If we start seeing drone-based grenade attacks in the US, it could absolutely be worth learning to shoot clays. But at the moment, I'd still think of a shotgun as primarily a luxury/recreational item

If you've somehow got drones attacking you, I guess you could probably wreck one's rotors with #8 bird shot. But if you're just shooting at random drones, that's a really good way to get, like, *mega* arrested

Go nuts! They're a lot of fun for shooting sports. But don't rely on it for self or community defense and don't buy one until you have a good rifle and a good pistol!

"I can't buy an AR-15 in my state"

This one's trickier because what you can get varies wildly by state. The KelTec SU-16 probably has a compliant version for your state. They're broadly ok, and they take AR-15 magazines. Read/watch reviews of compliant 5.56 semiauto rifles (5.56 is the best choice)
