To ignore all of that is to flatten both their characters and story together so much that I genuinely am not sure what people could even get out of it. They just want to see The Incredibles again or something?

I didn't even ship them until that episode, so I wasn't seeing it with yaoi goggles on. To me it was pretty damn clear what was happening and that Alastor was f deliberately portrayed as being unnecessarily cruel. It's not like Vox liking men was a secret to the audience at that point either.

No no that's exactly it. He has to learn from his mistakes so that he can become a full person instead of this broken ego driven shell that he has been wearing around for the past 70 years. I think his growth might be contrasted with Al's lack of it in interesting ways that force both to change.
