#Meshtastic Solar Node workshop: build a low-power mesh-communication node based on the NiceRa design — a small form-factor board using an NRF52 (Pro-Micro) microcontroller and an SX1262 radio module.

In conjunction with https://signalsrising.org/ In this hands-on workshop, participants will build a low-power mesh-communication nod. These nodes are ideal for deployment in areas with limited infrastructure — for emergency communications, community networks, or off-grid connectivity. Participants should have some familiarity with electronics and microcontrollers (e.g., soldering, flashing firmware) — but we’ll walk through everything step-by-step, so intermediate skill levels are welcome. Ideal for community-tech groups, local disaster-prep teams, NGOs operating in remote areas, or educational groups working on connectivity challenges. Why This Workshop Matters In many underserved or remote regions, traditional communication infrastructure (cell towers, internet) may be unreliable or nonexistent — especially during emergencies (natural disasters, power outages). Mesh networks — where each node can relay messages — offer resilience and flexibility. By building solar-powered nodes, we eliminate dependence on mains power and allow deployment in remote and off-grid locations. The NiceRa design is compact, efficient, and well suited for this purpose (NRF52 + SX1262 radio). The workshop empowers participants not just to build hardware, but to understand how to deploy and manage resilient communication networks — creating real-world impact. Signals Rising provides education and support to the public around radio and other communication technologies. We also provide funding for projects to facilitate growth of the amateur radio community. Signals Rising provides funding and educational resources to underserved individuals and communities to receive radio licensing and equipment. We also sponsor research projects to expand the field of amateur radio communication. All solar nodes built will be distributed to the many communities that have put in requests for assistance in setting up meshtastic systems in their regions.

Join us this Wednesday, Nov. 5th for a timely screening of British radical director Peter Watkins' “Punishment Park” (1971), who passed away last Thursday at the age of 90. Taking place during a fictionalized Nixon administration, the pioneering mockumentary/drama depicts a European film crew (led by an off-camera narrator/interviewer played by Watkins) following several detained political dissidents given two options: spend 20 years in prison or three days in Punishment Park – a 53-mile California desert trek with no food or water where they must reach a checkpoint with a U.S. flag while avoiding being captured by armed National Guard trainees and police officers. Shot “newsreel”-style on a $95,000 budget in the wake of the Kent State Massacre and Chicago Seven trial, “Punishment Park” stars nonprofessional actors picked for their actual political views, resulting in mostly-improvised dialogue and expressed genuine beliefs – antiwar, hippie, Civil Rights, feminist, revolutionary, and reactionary alike – reflective of the times. The controversial film was shunned by Hollywood distributors upon release, despite Watkins’ prior Academy Award for his 1966 nuclear war film “The War Game”. Yet it anticipates the future fictional dystopian games of “Squid Game”, “The Running Man”, and “The Purge”…and may even resemble footage of certain contemporary events currently all over your social media feeds.

Join us this Wednesday, October 15th for a screening of Piotr Szulkin's “Ga-Ga: Glory to the Heroes” (1986). This dystopian sci-fi/comedy follows Scope, a prisoner aboard a spaceship who is “volunteered” for a one-way mission to an uninhabited planet. Instead, he arrives on the unexpectedly Earth-like Australia 458, whose population declares Scope a “hero” and suspiciously encourages him to commit any crime or evil act he wants. However, Scope soon discovers the cost of his newfound glory and freedom – his own televised public execution. Can he outwit a sadistic society filled with demented characters and escape his fate? “Ga-Ga” is the final film in Szulkin's “apocalypse” tetralogy, all of which were produced and released (and occasionally banned) during communist Poland. Filled with dark, grotesque humor, neo-noir visuals, and surrealist allusions to both the Soviet system and Christianity, the satirical film explores free will, mass spectacle, and the value of human life under the callous cynicism of authoritarian rule. Ridgewood Commons events are donation based, no one is turned away for lack of funds. Withfriends tickets are useful for us as RSVPs, to gauge expected attendance, but are not required and will not be checked at the event.

Join us Wednesday, October 1st for a screening of Allan Moyle’s punk pirate radio classic, “Pump Up The Volume” (1990), followed by demos of modern DIY radio tools from RC's own Technical Collective (aka Basement). The drama stars Christian Slater as Mark, a shy, suburban high school student secretly broadcasting a pirate radio show from his parents’ basement under the DJ names “Happy Harry Hard-On” and “Hard Harry”. Mark's sarcastic persona and teen angst-filled rants about American society and his school's dark secrets soon become popular among his fellow students. But after his candor inspires a couple listeners to make tragic decisions, concerned parents, Mark's father (and school commissioner), the police, and even the Federal Communications Commission scramble to track down and stop this mysterious youth provocateur. Eerily anticipating the future of blogging, podcasting, and internet edgelord culture, “Pump Up the Volume” came out a year after Slater's breakout starring role in “Heathers”. The film's soundtrack includes Leonard Cohen, Ice-T, The Descendents, Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Richard Hell, Pixies, and a never-released track by the Beastie Boys just a year before the release of Nirvana's “Nevermind” transformed radio and popular culture forever. Moyle would later direct “Empire Records”, another Gen X, soundtrack-driven coming-of-age staple. After the screening, we will discuss how you can hop on the airwaves with legal tools like ham radio and newer messaging protocols like Meshtastic and Reticulum that can bypass internet and cellphone networks entirely. In the spirit of the film's call to “steal the air”, we may even discuss how to (on a purely “hypothetical” basis) build a DIY pirate radio station that can broadcast on FM and join NYC's own decades-old history of pirate radio, from Les Paul's legendary Booger Brothers Broadcasting System in Jackson Heights to the wide tapestry of community stations today.

Zohran Mamdani’s recent nomination as the Democratic party candidate for New York City mayor has galvanized many looking for a leftwing alternative to centrist neoliberalism. He could well become the city’s second democratic socialist executive, after longtime DSA activist David Dinkins (who served from 1990 to 1993), and the most progressive since the New Deal Republican Fiorello La Guardia (who served from 1934 to 1945). This would come just two years after Brandon Johnson’s successful election to the mayoralty of Chicago. But this also poses the question of the broader legacy of municipal socialism and its relation to class power, from Austromarxist Red Vienna to the “sewer socialist” mayors of Milwaukee. While the accomplishments of these earlier examples should be acknowledged, so too must their limits.
