They've been using the Wiki Loves Monuments photography competition to gather images of heritage sites threatened by war. There is emphasis on sites that have been damaged or destroyed by the ongoing war. Without these efforts, heritage disappears from view.

I think the outer walls at Cardiff were built in the 19th-century along the line of earlier walls. At Cardiff you can walk inside the walls and during WWII the passages were used as bomb shelters

When you see an arrangement like that there will often be a passage inside the wall giving defenders access. Some of the castles built by Edward I in Wales had multiple loopholes connected so one person could shoot in several directions. I'll see if I can track down the diagram.
