How it feels to fill up my water bottle at SfN

Excited to share new (unpublished and collaborative) drosophila connectome work at SfN next week! 🪰 #sfn2025

During my PhD I wanted to write a “vanilla” network neuroscience paper to fill out the CV. 1000 citations later…

Excited to share the latest preprint from the lab:

Rethinking scale in network neuroscience: Contributions and opportunities at the nanoscale

We argue that there’s a natural compatibility of network neuroscience tools with synapse-resolved connectomes.

Big picture: community structure of C. elegans connectome and an "effectome" derived from insane stimulation experiments (see shorturl.at/vYEDZ) are poorly aligned (except for pharynx, oddly).

Wires ≠ propagation paths.

A truly interesting wrinkle in the tapestry of structure-function papers.

Personalized Adaptive Cortical Electro-stimulation (PACE) in Treatment-Resistant Depression

Punchline: PERSONALIZED network neuroscience works.

*Easily* the most important paper I’ve been part of.

Read the manuscript for details. Watch the movies for *amazing* testimonial.

Lastly, we show that CAP rate -- how frequently SCAN activity "bursts" above some threshold -- is modulated by limb immobilization. Something about casting your arm for an extended period of time (a crazy strong perturbation) changes the dynamics. 8️⃣
July 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM
When we transform CAPs to connectivity using edge time series, we find that not all the connectivity maps look like SCAN seed FC. Though all together, the time-varying connectivity maps almost perfectly recapitulate seed FC. 7️⃣
July 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM
We also examine time-varying properties, like coactivation patterns and instantaneous connectivity. We find evidence of six CAPs that are (broadly) shared across individuals, but refined at the participant level. 6️⃣
July 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM
The network mapping technique we use usually only allows for each vertex to be assigned to a single network. But if we relax this criterion to allow for overlapping network labels, SCAN is positioned as a hub of network overlap -- all the sensorimotor and action networks converge onto it. 5️⃣
July 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM
First, we show that the intereffector regions aren't homogenous in their FC (surprise, surprise) and that SCAN isn't totally cohesive, internally. 4️⃣
July 25, 2025 at 5:55 PM
SCAN is still a relatively new "thing" and there's lots to discover. Here, we look at a bunch of these undisclosed features. We focus on a two datasets of densely-sampled individuals -- minimum of 5h worth of data (pre-censoring) -- with personalized estimates of everybody's network structure. 3️⃣

An entropic measure of diverse specialisation highlights multifunctional neurons in annotated connectomes.

Super cool stuff -- this is the direction that network neuroscience, as a field, should be moving.
