“Muti-hyung, is it going to be okay?” Haru asks from across the waiting area aisle, uncharacteristically anxious. “The train’s really late.” “It’s fine,” Wumuti replies, serene. Next to him, Rui is checking his hair in his pocket mirror for the umpteenth time, but that’s just normal, so Wumuti dismisses it from his attention. “Hyung,” Hyun says hesitantly. “It’s fine, I promise.” Honestly, these children wouldn’t survive a day in c-ent, where nothing has every run on time and no schedule remains correct longer than the first listed event. “I always add in extra time. And I have alternate plans for everything, if we’re really cutting it last-minute. We can do our makeup on the train.” Rui snaps his mirror closed at that, looking at him in horror. “No, we cannot! I can’t do eyeliner in a moving vehicle. That’s art!” Wumuti looks toward the ceiling and tries to restrain a sigh, praying for patience.

“The variety show wants us to do what?” Seonghwa asks, puzzled. “Do a Korean reenactment of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” Hongjoong repeats, resisting the urge to shake his phone like that will make the email say something different. “How many people even know that movie?” Wooyoung wonders, not unreasonably. San nods next to him, also looking perplexed. Mingi is busy looking up a plot synopsis. “There are really only two characters in this, what do they want us to with eight?” Yunho leans over his shoulder to see and Mingi’s attention very visibly drifts, so Hongjoong stops expecting a lot of help from that quarter. “Well, it’s mostly about one guy reencountering the same super annoying person over and over again during a series of travel disasters, so I guess we could each take turns running into Wooyoung,” Jongho suggests with a sly smirk. “Yah!” Wooyoung hurls a pillow at him. “Why do you even know that?” Jongho, it turns out, watched the movie on a flight at some point on the advice of yet another music industry hyung he’d collected somewhere. He gets involved in recounting the plot in detail to Yeosang, who has never heard of this movie and very clearly isn’t bothering to retain any of what he’s being told, but it’s probably helpful to the others, so Hongjoong doesn’t interrupt. Seonghwa leans in to whisper, “I hate to admit it, but Jongho’s idea would probably work.” Hongjoong nods back, trying not to notice Seonghwa’s breath on his ear. He opens the notes app on his phone to start planning instead. Sometimes he’s really thankful this job keeps them too busy for him to really think about anything else…

Kibum was no stranger to the concept of suffering in the name of fashion. He was usually the one loftily telling someone else that it was worth it and they just needed to suck it up. Unfortunately he might have misjudged this time. Just a little. A smidge. A huge gust of wind funneled down the street to where they were standing again and he gave up all pretense. His very sophisticated, very designer jacket that looked so good in candid tabloid shots had been a mistake, okay? He admitted it! A mistake! And he’d never live to rectify it because he was about to freeze to death while waiting for the next set-up for their concept photos. Why weren’t they doing these on a soundstage somewhere anyway? Suddenly: warmth. All around him, hugging him from behind. Blinking in confusion, he looked down and found a very familiar, sadly unfashionable puffer jacket. A body pressed against his as hands came around to the front and zipped him into the jacket. With Jinki. “Hyung!” he protested. Jinki just hummed in his ear. He sounded pleased with himself. “We must look ridiculous! What if someone sees?” “Lots of people are seeing,” Jinki said, gesturing around at all the staff in a motion Kibum couldn’t help but follow with his own body, trapped as he was now. “What if someone takes a picture?” Jinki rested his chin on Kibum’s shoulder, and Kibum leaned back into him without quite meaning to. “Then it’ll make great behind-the-scenes content, you know that. And now you’re not freezing and I’m warmer as well.” Another gust of wind whipped past and Jinki wrapped his arms around Kibum, clearly intending to stay here until they were called to set. Kibum sighed and gave in, relaxing into the increasing warmth of Jinki’s coat.

It was actually free from DMC when I placed a huge thread order for a class I was teaching and I never thought I'd find a use for it, but apparently it was waiting for this project! (I also got red in that same set of freebie fabric.)

The cabin was supposed to be nice. It was supposed to have every comfort of home, all the amenities a person could want for a nice getaway. Notably, to Kibum, that included heat. “I can practically see my breath in here!” he complained. He was sitting on the couch under every blanket he could find, contemplating whether he was going to have to resort to wearing his puffer coat to bed. This was ridiculous. He would have suggested they go back to Seoul immediately but it’s already dark and it started snowing again. Minho, the maniac, was cheerfully lacing up his boots and putting his coat back on. “Where are you going?” “To get firewood! I’m pretty sure the little store we passed at the bottom of the road had some for sale outside the door.” Kibum glanced doubtfully at the fireplace. It looked largely decorative. “Do you even know how to build a fire properly? Are we going to burn the cabin down or die of asphyxiation?” Minho finished stomping on his boots and straightened up with an affronted look. “Of course I know how.” He looked at the fireplace as well. “It would be better if it were a woodstove, but we can make do for the night. I can just set an alarm to keep waking up to check on it.” Kibum really wished he didn’t find Minho’s outdoorsy athletic nonsense attractive. He snuggled further under the covers. “Well, hurry back. The sooner it gets a little warmer in here, the sooner we can find a few other ways to keep warm as well.” The grin Minho shot him over his shoulder on the way out was entirely too happy.

“We should cancel the trip,” Rui announces, looking out the window. He’s doing something that would be scowling, if he’d let his face crease that much. As it is, it’s mostly coming across a stern pout. How dare the weather disobey his wishes? Hyun restrains himself from commenting on it. That won’t help them get out the door any faster. “The first snow is pretty,” he says instead. “We can take all kinds of pictures for you to post. You got that new faux fur coat and everything!” Rui turns away from the window and narrows his eyes. “I know what you’re doing.” Hyun smiles at him winningly, throwing in a few bats of his eyelashes. “Yes, but is it working?” Rui’s mouth twists, a little sourly, a little ruefully. “Yes.” He spins toward the entryway, somehow giving the impression of having stamped his foot in pique without actually doing it. “I need a hat, though. You have to help me pick!” Hyun tries to banish his now very amused smile as he follows. They’re still going to be delayed at least half an hour longer taking pictures in the snow, but it’s worth it.

Haru is usually a very upbeat person. It’s one of the first things people notice about him and he takes pride in it. He likes making people happy! This trip was supposed to be making Hyun happy! He’d complained he didn’t really feel like he’d gotten to see much of Japan last time they were there, and they had a break, and Haru missed his mom and had been planning to go see her anyway, and it should have been the perfect opportunity! Instead, they’re still stuck in the airport. He’d tried to make the best of this too, about an hour ago, cheerfully suggesting that this gives them time to eat a real meal in one of the restaurants instead of snacks on the plane, but now their order has clearly been forgotten and he’s stressed enough about it now his Korean has abandoned him and… Hyun makes concerned eyebrows at him and purses his lips. “Stay here,” he says, patting Haru’s hand before he stands. Haru is distracted from his efforts to blink away forming tears by the sight. Hyun really is so majestic sometimes when he stands to his full height. He makes his way to the counter with almost intimidating grace. “Excuse me,” Haru can hear him say firmly, and his heart does a guilty little flip at the thought of having gotten so frustrated with the day to have activated Hyun’s protective introvert override, but really, how can he not feel loved?
