Thank you to @wr-dsb.bsky.social #MathFacilitators for this gr8 idea. Ss in random groups of 4 got to know each other by creating a WODB about themselves.
1 thing unique to you
1 thing unique to two of you
1 thing unique to three of you
1 thing that all 4 of you have in common

Here we go! Day 1 of the school year. Leaning into the discomfort of starting the year with blank walls and no desks! New school = construction zone and limited supplies - kind of forces you to rethink how we can do this differently!

How did all this fit in a cubicle?! 11 years of collecting ideas, books, tools, and treasures. Grateful for all I’ve learned from brilliant educators. Headed back to the classroom to explore cross-curricular learning + assessment in the messy middle years.

To ensure T clarity (effect size=0.85) Ss should be able to answer 3 questions:
❓What am I learning today (learning intention)
❓How will I know that I learned it (success criteria) (0.88)
❓Why am I learning this (relevance)
Ss then drive their learning

Already so many aha moments and I have barely began digging into this book.
Specifically appreciate the continuum of engagement and recognizing that for too long education has defined engaged Ss by the participating column and missed that disrupting and avoiding are active strategies for Ss

Facilitated a gr8 session with admin about assessment practices and how they shape the culture of a school.

Blue = assessment of
Yellow=assessment for
Pink=assessment as

Y-axis=Student identity
X-axis=school culture

What do you notice?

It’s not the tool, it’s how students use it to think.

In Coach’s Corner (Tier 2), these tools become thinking tools. Not just answer machines.

In a recent session with school leaders, we explored how assessment shapes not
just grades but student identity.

1 quiz, 13 educators, 7 different marks.

When we assess through points we risk missing what students
actually understand.

Many cheer when Ss recite the #quadraticformula.

But do they know what they’re finding?

Can they see where the roots live on the graph?

Most of all can they tell you why it matters?

That’s when I’m truly impressed. That’s when understanding starts to take root.

Leave it to teachers to find a creative way to create rekenreks when funding is low. Some bracelet elastics, beads, duct tape and foam core board make an extremely useful thinking tool. Thanks Megan Chadwick for sharing this with me. #iteachmath

Noticing the response to “I am good at math” was quite low, @wrdsb.bsky.social Ts at Manchester PS has made it a mission to talk to Ss about what it means “to be good at math” including an entrance way display! ❤️❤️ #iteachmath #eduskychat
