Title 1 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act provides federal support to school districts for low-income communities. This support primarily takes the form of funding and support programs such as reading specialists and creating smaller class sizes. /7

The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights enforces Title IX, which prohibits “discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance.” Accordingly, OCR investigates allegations of sex-based discrimination at educational institutions/ /6

The Office Of Elementary and Secondary Education (OESE) coordinates with state and local governments to ensure that students of all backgrounds have access to educational services. These programs support migrant and even homeless students. /5

Dismantling the Department of Education will have catastrophic consequences for students of all stripes. And yes, that includes students of color, special needs students, migrant students, English language learners, and low-income students. /4

Despite federal law mandating these offices be housed within the Department of Education, the Administration found a work around that allows other agencies to run education programs while under a contract with the Department /3

Trump and Secretary McMahon plan to kick out the Office of Civil Rights, the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, the Indian Education Program, Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, and the Office of Postsecondary Education. /2
