Just went to see The Importance of Being Earnest. Excellent! Stephen Fry is superb as Lady Bracknell. We had dinner afterwards but, alas, he wasn't in costume .....

Today in 1605 Guy Fawkes and friends tried to blow up Parliament. I was walking past the execution spot when a US couple asked if anything had happened here. "Yes", I said, "the Gunpowder gang were publicly disemboweled, castrated, hanged, and beheaded." The fife: "My lord, was this recently?"

I'll be preaching and presiding at St. Luke's, Burlington at 8.15 and 10am. Not sure if the sermon will make everybody comfortable. I certainly hope is doesn't! Christianity is life-changing and world-changing.

I've lost about 30 pounds. Not entirely sure how because I eat largely what I want but it might be due to giving up alcohol, of which I was far too fond. I'm 175 pounds, hardly light for someone who is 5ft 9, but my children worry that I'm too thin. I've dreamt of such a problem for years!

Apparently our grandson (4 in January) has some imaginary monster friends. Last night he suddenly said, "Monster friends don't despair! I am here and can read to you."

For God's sake don't tell Candace Owens there's a statue of a Jewish man hiding behind her!

Laszlo Krasznahorkai wins Nobel prize for Literature! Family name was changed to the more Hungarian Krasznahorkai due to anti-semitism. “Our original name was Korin, a Jewish name. With this name, he would never have survived." Those Korins and Corens .....

Very good news!

Let's see who condemns and who remains silent. These people were British Jews attending their place of worship on the holiest day of the year. And if anyone mentions Gaza we know their motives. Anti-semitism existed long, long before now.

L'shana tova to my Jewish friends and family. To those who call themselves Christian but dislike Jews (and they're especially vocal and influential at the moment) do remember that Jesus and his closest followers all celebrated Rosh Hashanah or Feast of Trumpets.

60 years ago I was with my dad in Hackney when a group of men walked past. One of them suddenly said, "Oi, Phil!" It was Ron Kray with his brother Reg. They knew dad from their boxing days in the east-end. They were very affectionate and gave me some money as a gift. Dad never told me who they were.

Air Show today. I'm not a huge fan really - prefer the dignity and importance of World War Two aircraft. Lucky enough to go up in a Lancaster a few years ago.

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Crecy in 1346 in which the English battered the French. Could have been worse of course - a few years later the French would be ruled by King Charles VI who was convinced he was made entirely of glass. And the 100 Years War actually lasted 116 years.
