Winds gusting as high as 70 mph along the highest ridges and up to 45 mph in lower valleys. * WHERE...Lassen-Eastern Plumas-Eastern Sierra Counties. * WHEN...Until 10 AM PST Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel and recreation could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday and Christmas Day commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snow levels lower to 4500 to 5500 feet by Christmas Day. Heavy rain tonight could lead to ponding of water on roads and minor flood impacts. * WHAT...Heavy snow. Snow accumulations between 1 to 2 feet for Lake Tahoe communities with 3 to 6 feet above 7,000 feet. Winds gusting as high as 100 mph along the highest ridges and up to 50 mph in the lower elevations and on Lake Tahoe. * WHERE...Greater Lake Tahoe Area. * WHEN...Until 10 AM PST Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel and outdoor recreation could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact commutes Wednesday and Christmas Day. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. * WHAT...Heavy snow. Snow accumulations of 4 to 6 feet above 8,000 feet and 1 to 3 feet below 8,000 feet and along US-395. Winds gusting as high as 100 mph along the highest ridges and up to 60 mph along US-395. * WHERE...Mono County. * WHEN...Until 10 AM PST Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel and outdoor recreation could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact commutes Wednesday and Christmas Day. Very strong winds could cause extensive damage to trees and power lines. * WHAT...Periods of wet snow. Snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches above 6000 feet. 2 to 5 inches possible between 5000 and 6000 feet. South winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 45 to 55 mph. Winds may gust up to 65 mph along ridges. * WHERE...Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area. * WHEN...From 4 AM Thursday to 4 AM PST Friday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Light snow is possible above 5500 feet Thursday morning and afternoon, but there is higher confidence in accumulating snow Thursday night into Friday morning. There is also much uncertainty in snow reaching valley floors, but a trace to an inch of snow is possible on valley floors between Thursday night and Friday morning. This may result in snow-covered walkways, slick roads and potential travel disruptions.

The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a BACKCOUNTRY AVALANCHE WATCH for the following areas: NWS Reno NV - NVZ002 (Greater Lake Tahoe)...CAZ072 (Greater Lake Tahoe (CA)) * WHAT...HIGH avalanche danger could occur in the backcountry on Thursday and Thursday night. * WHERE...Central Sierra Nevada Mountains between Yuba Pass (Hwy 49) on the north and Ebbetts Pass (Hwy 4) on the south, including the greater Lake Tahoe area. This only includes backcountry areas, and does not include ski areas and highways where avalanche mitigation programs exist. * WHEN...In effect from Wed 09:00 PST to Thu 05:00 PST. * IMPACTS...A powerful storm with rapidly accumulating snowfall and strong winds may cause widespread avalanche activity in the mountains.
